Feb 11, 2003 When did it become cool to have a telephone conversation in public? I mean, there have always been public telephones, but they were always tethered to the wall and you had to feed them change. In fact, at one time a telephone conversation was considered so private that one would actually enter into a "phone booth" in order to have it, and it was considered rude to stand around outside and try to listen. Not so anymore. The other day as I was innocently trying to decide whether to buy the 16 slice package of Kraft singles, or just go for broke and get one of those 96 slice packs I had to hear some idiot's conversation with his girlfriend that went on for God knows how long. When I say that I couldn't help but overhear the conversation I mean exactly that, I could not help but overhear it. He was actually shouting into his mouthpiece that was connected to his headphones that were of course connected to his phone that was connected to his belt. She was having some kind of problem with his constant philandering and he was trying to explain to her that these other ladies were "just friends". Yeah, ok. I wanted to go over and offer my advice to him on how to deal with the situation but I am not sure if that is proper edicate. I know that it must be proper to let someone, a complete stranger, overhear your conversation, but I wonder when the total stranger will be allowed to but in and offer his/her advice. I hope soon because I was frustrated for this idiot's girlfriend and I am sure that I could have offered a few words of direction.
