The Wonderful World of Toilet Paper Dispensers
Dec 6, 2002

I have yet to find a decent public restroom toilet paper dispenser that actually works. After relieving yourself, it's time to clean up and all you can get is a wad of shredded paper. Here are among my "favorite" types of dispensers:

There is the one that is on a horizontal metal bar with fifteen rolls shoved together so tight that the rolls can't spin. Thus, you can't even grab onto a sheet. The only way to can obtain a scrap of something to feel clean is through scratching away at this horizontal kitty post.

Even more fun are the ones that actually dispenser one sheet at a time. What's fun about these is when the paper gets stuck in the dispenser and you have to fish it out with your little finger, after which about fifty sheets will fall onto the floor.

In my college dorm, housing installed the type that has one roll sitting on top of the other. Apparently no one thought of gravity and the weight of one roll sitting on top of another roll. The weight of the top roll prevents the roll on the bottom from moving. I always end up lifting the top flap of the dispenser, taking the top roll out, and unrolling a wad.

Then, someone got the right idea with the industrial dispensers with the giant dual rolls in one dispenser. The two rolls are placed on separate reels next to each other and actually roll! Even more wonderful, the toilet paper is durable and won't rip after one small pull. The only problem is, the paper is so strong that even the jagged teeth at the end of the dispenser can't rip the stuff and the more you pull, the larger the pile of toilet paper grows on the floor...

...Something as simple as the toilet paper dispenser and the fast passed evolving technology of today can't even make a decent dispenser. I think I may develop a new world award for brilliant conveniences. It will be like the Pulitzer Prize but for the little things in life.
