Jan 23, 2003 Now we are barely into 2003 and already there is a small army of people running for the Democratic nomination for next year. This list is in no particular order. As expected Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) has announced his candidacy. Sen Lieberman as you know was Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 Presidential race. We also have Rep. Richard Gephardt the former Democratic Majority then minority leader. He had to leave that position because he had voted for the resolution of force against Iraq back in late Oct. So much for the open-mindedness of the Democrats on Capitol Hill. Sen. John Kerry of Mass. A less than great imitation of JFK. His campaign will be financed by his wife's money a part of the Heinz Estate. Former Gov. Dean of Vermont is expected to be a long shot at this point. The same was said about another Gov. from Arkansas who went on to win the Presidency twice. The Rev. Al Sharpton has just announced he will run as well. Rev. Sharpton has almost no chance of winning. This is more likely a desire to gain influence within the Democratic party. Carol Moseley-Braun may also be making a run at the nomination. One wonders why she may run when she could not even win a second term in the Senate. Well there is a theory that the Democrats are going to try to neutralize Rev. Sharpton any way they can. The party of diversity doesn't seem to want a blackman gumming up the works for their white candidates. There is also a movement to get some well known black candidates to run as favorite son's. It seems the Democratic party learned their lesson back when Jessie Jackson ran. He was able to gain some influence because he was the only black running at the time. Maybe more interesting is who is not running: Former Vice President Gore Senator Hillary Clinton Sen. Minority Leader Tom Daschle Vice President Gore and Daschle, Thomas - (D - SD) have announced they will not be running. There are many who believe Senator Clinton is waiting for 2008 when President Bush will not be able to be re-elected. With President Bush having such high marks from the American people it is not surprising that the major possible candidates don't want to take that kind of a chance. However with Sen. Daschel there is something more that must be understood. He is not now running and may never run. To become President a person must be able to suffer through an intense exam from the press. Even more so since the Clinton years. Sen. Daschels wife is the real problem to see the full scope check out this article: I’m Linda, Fly Me The real reason Tom Daschle didn't run for president by Doug Ireland Now there will be some additions and subtractions from this list as we approach 2004. One thing, it seems we can see the strategy that the Dems will be following. Attack the President on the war on terror and tax cuts for the rich. The latter of these 2 is a tired old argument that has lost its clout. More people are now in the stock market than ever and have become more sophisticated due to alternative media, such things as who pays what in taxes, how the government wastes money they take from the tax payers, etc. I have heard no one present any kind of a vision as to where they want to take America. To say someone is wrong is only half a solution. If they are wrong, then give us an alternative not just they stink. As far as the lack of progress on the war on terror, seems almost as though the Dems are hoping there is another attack so they can say “see I told you so”. What little they have proposed are mostly watered down versions of the Homeland Security Bill. We have made some headway on the war on terror. Bin Laden, even though he has not been captured or killed, is on the run, we have killed or captured some high ranking officials in Al Queda network. The war on Iraq - which seems like it will certainly happen in the next 6 weeks or so - should do damage to all terror networks because there will one less supporter who would be willing to sell the terror networks weapons of mass destruction or give them safe haven.
