Feb 24, 2003 Boise State Football hit the big time in 2002. Boise State University, located in Boise, Idaho has been a school that has diligently worked up through the ranks - a Junior College, then a College, and finally a University. In 1980 Boise State won the Division I-AA national football title. A decade later BSU stepped up to the big time in Division I. At the Division I level Boise State has quickly cracked the upper echelon, running to a perfect 8-0 record in the WAC and finishing this year ranked as 12th in the nation (ESPN, and 15th in AP). The Boise State Broncos had the hottest offense in the nation, scoring 50 or more points in five games. Boise State won its bowl appearance in the Humanitarians Bowl, where they are 3-0 over the past 4 years. The big question for Boise State in the coming year is whether or not the Broncos will be able to sustain their momentum. Quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie, one of the top rated passers in the nation, will be returning for his senior year. The Broncos lost running back Brock Forsey, NCAA's touchdown leader for last year (scoring 26 TD's). Head Coach Dan Hawkins will also be returning, recently turning down offers by Baylor and Oregon State to stay with the Boise State program. After Oregon State's Dennis Erickson departed for the San Franciso 49ers, Hawkins withdrew from consideration as a Beaver and that will make the BSU/Oregon State game this fall very interesting. The Broncos will be tested early, facing not only Oregon State but also BYU before slipping into the WAC season and meeting Hawaii and Fresno State. Will the Broncos be able to sustain their top-level rating? The 2003 season will be an exciting challenge for Boise State and Hawkins has hinted that BSU will have a defense that is even better in the coming year to go along with the high-powered offense.
