A Cat Tale
Jan 23, 2003

An interesting and humorous (I thought so anyway) event took place during this past Christmas season. The college that I attend purchases dead cats (died from natural causes) to use in their nursing program when it comes time to do the dreaded dissection. I must say that our school has one of the top nursing programs around and can’t get them out fast enough in this area. Anyway, on with the story.

The students from this class thought of a humorous way to get their instructor. They took the cat tails and tied them onto the branches of his Christmas tree. While some of you may think this is a sick sense of humor, I find that it took some ingenious thinking on the students’ part to come up with this idea. Relax, my family owns four cats and these were not only already dead but were helping to further education.

Somebody got wind of this to the local newspaper who also saw the lighter side to the story and ran a picture with a small article. They explained that it was just a prank on their instructor, but the paper had no idea (nor would I have) just how much of a hullabaloo this would cause. This caused an avalanche of editorials from many irate people who just didn’t get it.

I was amazed at how outraged and upset these people got over a harmless little joke. I would almost bet the house that over 75 percent of these people pulled pranks (some probably much worse) in their heyday. Those who didn’t; it explains their problem as being diagnosed with lack of a humorous bone.

One woman even wrote in saying that these were not the kind of people she wanted to take care of her. I beg to differ for myself. That is exactly the kind of person I want to deal with when there is an emergency or I have to remain in a hospital for any period of time over one hour. It helps to make light and joke in tense situations.

I guess what I found to be the most astounding part to all of the debacle showing up on the editorial pages was the fact that we are in peril at this time from more than one source and these people are getting upset over a harmless prank. Humor seems to be very under- rated right now and I believe that we need to lighten up a bit before it causes unnecessary problems. I think it is just what the doctor (or nurse) ordered.
