May 28, 2004 War is not pretty. It is not nice. In fact, the last I checked, people died in a war. Not only that, but people died horrible deaths. There seem to be some people who have forgotten this. In fact, there are some people who would say that the United States military must "play nice". Our military must somehow break the mold of all military endeavors before it and somehow make killing people a nice thing. Our military must also treat all of the prisoners of war with respect and kindness. Some people would that our military treated the prisoners of war much like a teacher would treat a pre-school class. Yes, what happened to the prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison was wrong. It was stupid. It was not however a crime so great that it needs be condemned at a level that is becoming of the condemnation saved for cold blooded killers. And speaking of cold blooded killers, what about the beheading of Nick Berg? The people that beheaded him were evil. Incredibly, incredibly, evil. And mark this: The people that beheaded Nick Berg were no different than the people who were humiliated by our military at Abu Ghraib. Each of these prisoners would go out of their collective ways to behead you and every American they could. These prisoners were not a bunch of "nice guys" who happened to be in that prison because of jay-walking. Should we feel sorry for them? No. Should we be ashamed of the soldiers who abused them. Sure. But at some point the self-flagellation has got to stop. At some point we need to realize that we have much bigger fish to fry than some military personnel who got out of hand. The powers that be are taking care of them. They are being punished. What about the powers that be in the Arab world? Are they punishing the animals who beheaded Nick Berg? Are they seeing to it that Berg's beheading is soundly condemned? No. Unfortunately for us, all Nick Berg is to them is "Just another dead infidel," and the only good infidel is a dead one. We had better get our ducks in a row in this country and we had better decide if we are going to take war to the terror that threatens to do us in, or if we are going to let terror bring war to us. Its either or. There is no in between. This fight cannot be won by hoping that the terrorists will get "enlightened." This fight cannot be won by hoping that the terrorists will decide to be politically correct. Some would say that we cannot stoop to their level in fighting them. We haven't. Humiliation of a few prisoners is far from stooping to their level. The fact is that we have not stooped far enough. We have tried to play by all of the rules that apply to conventional warfare, and the enemy has decided to play by none of them. This will never work. We have brought a knife to a gun fight and the enemy knows it. They know that there are certain political pressures at home that will not allow us to fight them on terms that will guarantee victory. In this sense, Senator Kennedy is right. This war is like Vietnam. It is so because he and his party are trying to make it so. It should not be forgotten that this is the very same party that produced Bill Clinton, a man who clearly stated his "loathing for the military." Clinton also wanted to be sure that all of us from "European heritages" understood that we were not "blameless" in the September 11 attacks. Not only that, but this is the party that keeps saying that the problem in Abu Ghraib is systemic. It is universal to all of the military. Actually, it is universal, according to them, to all of the United States. That's right. This talk from the left about "systemic problems" in the military, is actually a reiteration of a long standing belief in the left that our society is ruled by a "Military Industrial Bureaucratic Technocratic Complex." In other words, our whole society is evil. We are evil because we are military minded (never mind that we want to protect ourselves), and we are industrial (never mind that industry made this country), and we are bureaucratic (never mind that we need a government), and we have technology (never mind that technology has saved millions of lives). The left actually feels that all of these things make us bad, they make us the evil colonists. This needs to be understood. We, who believe in the righteousness of our nation, we who are patriotic, must understand that the liberals do not see it that way. The liberals have their own vocabulary, they have indicted the United States as pure evil with code words like "systemic". If this is the way that the liberals think, and this is the way that they want to approach the war on terror, then we should start learning to speak Arabic right now. There is no hope. We must understand that the only hope that we have is in being righteous and in being faithful to our cause. We must be prepared to confront those who do not believe that our nation should exist, both on the Liberal Left and Radical Islam. In one sense there is no difference between the two: both do not believe that America should exist, both believe that America is evil. Sure they believe that we are evil for different reasons, but evil is evil. It is time that we start to realize that there is a very real threat to our survival. This threat is both in the United States and, of course, outside of it. We cannot win a war unless we know who the enemies are. We cannot win a war if we limit ourselves. Most importantly, we cannot win a war if we are confused, and this is the enemies biggest trick, confusion. It is the oldest trick in the book. (Remember the serpent in the Garden of Eden? He started all the trouble by getting Eve to question what God said.) We must not question what is right. We must instead be sure and stand fast and remember that God is in control. Only then can we win a war. ------------ Email Wesley Mills: wmills1@rochester.rr.com. Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
