Feb 24, 2003 Woody Allen's story about the group of three scientists who almost discovered the Heimlich manuever before Mr. Heimlich did is entertaining because of its obsurdity. The story, written in 1965 is entitled "A Giant Step For Mankind" and in it once scientist poses a very important question to another who seeks to do his choking experiments on humans rather than on hamsters. The scientist asks his counterpart if he feels that "science is above morality" and he "takes issue with his equating humans to hamsters." Bizarre maybe, but the question does remain a pertinent one. Well, one question is pertinent at least. The hamster question I am sure that we could all agree is easily answerable, unless of course you are a member of PETA. Then, of course hamsters are THE SAME as humans, and certainly there is no question of their equality. Hamsters, by the way make nice pets but can be at times annoying with their constant fixation on running in that stupid wheel of theirs. I thought of this the other day while I was excersizing on my treadmill in my basement. Anyway, back to the point at hand, the more appropriate question should be, "Is anything above morality?" The answer is of course, no. Or at least it should be. Alas, it is not. Not in our culture at least. Morality is all relative. The best example of this is the current anti-war movement. The Hollywood elites would have you belive tht they are taking the moral high-road. They would have you believe that because they are against this war they are the one's who are right. WRONG. The truth of the matter is that these Hollywood elites have no problem with immorality at all. This is evidenced in their idiotic, unexplainable, and hypocritical love of Bill Clinton. War is not the problem. They had no problem with Clinton loading up and dropping 1000's of pounds of bombs on Kosovo. They had no problem with his shamefully immoral actions. The problem that they have has nothing to do with morals, or war, or the "poor Iraqi's". The problem that they have is their unprecedented hatred of George Bush. Why? Because he is a republican and because he holds different views than they do. They preach inclusiveness but are never inclusive of ideals that they do not agree with. They hate those people who hold different views than they do. The war protest is a sham. The protest is a protest against a man that they hate because the man IS moral, the man DOES tell the truth, and the man DOES what he says that he will do. If effect the man that they hate is everything that they are not. Hollywood likes to appeal to the lowest common denominator and George Bush makes it impossible for them to do that. Perhaps human and hamsters are not equal. It would appear that hamsters may be better than Hollywood Humans, or at least less annoying.
