Feb 17, 2003 "The sun shines on a dog's rear end at least once a day." Or so my Uncle Mike used to say. I tend to agree and what better day to talk about the sun shining on someone that is less than deserving than on President's Day. Some people are just lucky I guess. Some people are at the right place at the right time. So it was with W. J. Clinton. Elected to the presidency with 43% of the vote in 1992 and 49% of the vote in 1996. He came roaring into office in 1992 and changed the presidency forever. Until 1992 the Presidency was an office that commanded respect. Until 1992 the office of the Presidency was an office of awe, fear, adoration, veneration, and presidents were held in high esteem. Even if you didn't agree with a president you still maintained respect for the office. Not so with Clinton. For a year we had to endure discussions in the news about things that I could not let my children hear. We had to endure speculations about what "sexual relations" really were. We had to endure discussions about "DNA" on a blue dress. We had to endure talk of actions perpetrated with a cigar. We had to look at and listen to Clinton lie. We had to see a degradation of the highest post in the land. Why? Because "the sun truly does shine on a dog's rear end at least once a day." That day just so happened to be the years 1992-2000 and that dog just so happened to be Clinton. Wesley Mills is a full time student and writing instructor at Empire State College in Rochester N.Y.
