Apr 22, 2004 We live in an amazing time. Technology has given us the ability to instantly get information that is filtered through so many different organizations that we might just be able to find Truth in mess that is News. No longer do we have to rely on Rather, Jennings or Brokaw. Now, we have news stories straight from the AP, Sky News, Reuters, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc., etc. Following this drastic change in the way we get news, analysis and opinion, another revolution has occurred…the Blog revolution has swept the Internet. For anyone who may be unaware, Blog is short for ‘Web Log’ and they are essentially web sites that are updated as frequently, or infrequently, as the Blogger desires. Some are dedicated to the mundane (e.g., what the Blogger as been doing today) while others are outlets for news and opinion. When I was first exposed to the political Blog, I was unsure how to react. It seemed odd that just anyone could start up one of these sites and, within minutes, be espousing whatever crackpot theories popped into their heads. Well, this situation is the definition of a free market, and it seems that only the strong survive and the crackpots are generally marginalized. Andrew Sullivan’s Blog was the first I ever read. He was one of the pioneers of the medium and continues today as on the most popular commentators on all things political. Since that first Blogsperience I have found a ton of insightful and eye-opening commentary and, perhaps most importantly, an absolutely overwhelming number of links to news stories that I might otherwise miss. So, being a bit of a political junky/medical student/scientist mix (a bit of a mutt, I know) I couldn’t help but join the fray. And so, using a term coined by Fr. Rob Johansen (keeper of the Blog Thrown Back), I would like to shamelessly Blug myself (although I feel a little shame, I’m learning to live with it). I have, in conjunction with a medical classmate and great friend, started a Blog entitled MuD & PhuD. The aim of MuD & PhuD is simple: We have set out to post on whatever strikes our fancy. Simple enough =). In reality, we tend towards medicine and science, the politics of both and politics in general. A fair question might be: What makes MuD & PhuD different from any other Blog (i.e., why read it)? Answer: The founding Bloggers at MuD & PhuD have significantly different opinions on, well, just about everything. Even with the countless Blogs out there I have yet to find one that offers nearly diametrically opposing viewpoints in the same space. I hope that this will prove interesting and serve to allow for considered and fair treatment of important topics while keeping both sides honest. So do us (and hopefully yourself) a favor and give MuD & PhuD a try. We come with a 100%, money back guarantee. If you’re not completely satisfied with the product just send it back for a full refund. With any luck you’ll love us and keep on coming back. ------------ About the author: Tom is a conservative medical student in liberal New England who probably spends too much time paying attention to politics and never lacks topics for friendly discussions. Check out his blog MuD&PHuD. Email Thomas Carroll: carroll@student.uchc.edu Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
