Apr 3, 2004 Don’t you just feel for those Spaniards? Here they thought they were doing the right thing. From the ashes of a horribly despicable attack on their citizens they lashed out electorally against the Evil Right Wing government that had gotten them all mixed up in Iraq and had made those innocent terrorists mad. Then what happens? They find another bomb apparently ready to go off on a set of train tracks. It just doesn’t seem fair. What did they do wrong? Didn’t the Terrorists say, “We’ll give you some time to get out of Iraq”? Jeeze, they just needed a little more time to give in to all demands. They’re not miracle workers, after all. On the other hand, maybe they could as the specter of Neville Chamberlain how appeasement worked out towards the end of the 1930’s. Politically and literally, I just don’t know how much longer appeasers can survive in this world. After 9/11, it became fully obvious to anyone with even a partially functioning brain that Americans had been deluding themselves into believing that the world was a nice, kind and reasonable place…or that at least the bad guys couldn’t possibly come to our home and hurt us. Well, we learned the hard way that they most certainly could do us great harm if we let our guard down. I suppose that it’s not terribly surprising that much of the world didn’t learn from our misfortune, given how many Americans seem already to have forgotten. The truly amazing thing is that Spain has seen what terrorists are willing to do both up close and from a distance…and they still don’t get it. What will it take to finally give sight to these blind fools? How many more innocent men, women and children must die before the supposedly civilized world wakes up and answers Terrorism with one voice? I don’t have the answer. But the way things are going I’m almost afraid to ask.
