Apr 17, 2004 Wiping his forehead, Max Syncrow was finally done. He didn’t really know what he was done doing; he just knew that whatever it was, it worked. Or so he believed. He didn’t really know what it did, just that it looked cool and seemed to be functioning properly. What he had built was a small motorized go-kart type of device. It was totally enclosed and it had 32 sharp prongs sticking out of it. They were where the lightning would strike to power up the special micro induced multi-phasic relay device he had designed many years ago. In essence, it created a time/warp/dimensional field. Where it would take you or when, he didn’t know. So, he devised a remote control with a four hour video capturing capability. The video could record 4 hours in 6 different directions at once. Now it was time for the real test. He was going to crank it up tonight as the weather was supposed to be very unstable. Lightning storms were supposed to be all over the area. He secretly hoped it worked. Covering the experiment up, Max goes into the house and gets ready for supper. “Mom”, he calls as he enters the house. There’s no answer and he’s confused. Looking at the clock on the wall, he sees it is already 20 minutes till ten. So he realizes he just spent the entire day in the garage working on his experiment. What an idiot I am, he thinks to himself. Going upstairs he peeks into his Mom’s bedroom and sees she is fast asleep. Smacking his forehead with the palm of his hand, he quietly closes the door and heads to his room. Undressing, he grabs a clean set of clothes and decides to clean up before the first test. Showering and changing clothes, he stops off in the kitchen and grabs a sandwich from the fridge. As a last thought, he also grabs a cold drink and heads back out into the garage. Munching on the sandwich, he opens the garage door and sees lightning in the distance. Smiling to himself, he rolls the device out onto the now deserted street. It is the only street in town that is straight for a mile and a half. Waiting patiently, a bolt of lightning hits the tree across the street and he knows it is time. Starting the motor on the go-kart, he hopes this works. As the go-kart starts down the road, he watches as it ramps up to the approximate speed he had calculated in his figures. When it reaches 43.786 miles per hour, lightning should hit it and make it do something. Putting on the specially equipped helmet he made, he watches as the vehicle accelerates from inside the vehicle. When the machine hits 43.786 mph, he blinks as a bolt of lightning hits the go-kart. Taking the helmet off, he rubs his eyes and then puts it back on. Looking for some kind of picture, he gets nothing but blackness. If he had watched without the helmet, he would have seen a most spectacular sight. When the go-kart was hit, it created a big bubble of light and then simply disappeared. Thinking something went wrong Max gets his other go-kart out and heads down the road expecting to see his machine lying in the road burning up. When he gets to the spot where the machine was hit, he sees a big black spot about 15 feet in diameter. Bushes in the vicinity are still on fire. Raising his hands in triumph, he jumps up and down as he screams out at the top of his lungs, “Yes, Yes, and Yes”. Getting back on his go-kart he races home and now he must wait. How long, he doesn’t know. 1 year later, as Max is figuring something may have gone wrong he has the second prototype ready to go. This time, he plans on riding in it to see where or when it goes. Having made plans in case something goes wrong, Max thinks he is ready for the test. At midnight a bad storm is supposed to hit. Preparing for the event, he has everything he needs or hopes he does. Kind of afraid yet amped up to see what it does, he is still not too sure he wants to do this. The thrill is too big for him to not want to do this. Climbing into the vehicle, he can only hope everything will be all right. Having left a note on his bed for his Mom, he starts up the vehicle and heads down the same road that his previous vehicle went down. As he reaches a speed of 40 mph, he slams on the brakes as a bright flash blinds him. When his eyes clear, he sees his other vehicle sitting on the side of the road smashed into a tree. Getting out, he goes over and looks at the damaged front end on the go-kart. Smoke billows from the inside. Just then the door opens and a strange looking figure emerges. “Holy smoke” Max says as he backs away. Running back to his other vehicle, he climbs in and heads down the road away from whatever it is that is climbing out of his machine. Not daring to look back, his adrenaline is rushing through his system. Not even realizing that his vehicle is turned on, he dimly remembers a bright flash. Waking up some indeterminate time later, he looks around and sees nothing he recognizes. This place is barren. There are no structures around and no trees. There are some ugly scrubby bushes scattered around. It is at this time that he realizes he is not on Earth. Looking around, he finally looks up and sees a batch of clouds coming his way. Looking down at the control panel, he realizes his machine is still turned on. Figuring he should continue on his way to wherever or whenever, he accelerates up to the preprogrammed speed and waits. This time he is ready for the shock of the lightning strike. The vehicle gets hit and re-emerges on another planet. This one is teeming with life. When he emerges from the field, he sees he is near a city. Slamming on the brakes, he turns the lightning generator off and just watches. Knowing he is not moving, he doesn’t understand why the city is getting closer. That is until he sees the city is moving towards him. He sees huge wheels at 50 foot intervals. The city looks to be about the size of New York. And it is moving. Stepping on the accelerator, he turns around and heads in the opposite direction from the city. Looking back he sees he is outdistancing the city by twice as much. And then he sees the small crafts in the air heading towards him. “Oh no”, he says to himself. Cranking up the generator, he reaches the speed and as the flash of lightning hits, a burst of energy just misses him. Re-emerging somewhere else, he sees a pristine lake. It reminds him of a lake he knew on Earth. Smiling, he turns the generator off and takes some readings to see if the air is breathable. Seeing that the air is similar to that of Earth, he decides to drive closer to the lake. Something seems wrong. He jams on the accelerator but the vehicle seems to be going in slow motion. He also feels like he is being crushed into his seat. “It must be a heavier gravity than Earth” he says to himself. Stopping the vehicle about 100 feet from the shore he climbs out of the vehicle to see if he will be able to stand. Using all his strength, he is able to exit the vehicle but very slowly. Walking as fast as he can, he gets near the lake when a large tentacle emerges from the lake and comes towards him. With a look of horror on his face, he turns around and heads back to his vehicle. Looking over his shoulder as he slowly runs he sees the tentacle getting closer. As he reaches the vehicle, he slowly climbs in. Realizing this is like a nightmare dream where you can’t go fast enough, he goes as fast as he can. Cranking up the vehicle, he turns the generator on and floors the accelerator. Seeing the tentacle almost on top of him, he hits a button that accelerates the vehicle to twice the speed. As he reaches the speed of lightning time, he sees the clouds above striking out violently with lightning in all directions. As the bolt hits the vehicle, he emerges somewhere else or some other time. Hoping this place is not dangerous he does notice lush trees and a city in the distance. Feeling the extra gravity gone, he hopes this place is a haven. Not some nightmare, come to life. ------------ ABOUT THE AUTHOR: My writing is weird and strange and I try to be different.
