Terrence Dean Astleford AKA KNIGHTWARP

Plug of Life
Apr 15, 2004

Sam Knightwarp is an avid diver. He has been diving for well over 20 years and is supposed to be one of the best in the world. When salvage hunters need a special diver for certain wrecks, they call Sam. He just happened to be diving for a salvage company that found a wreck in a spot they couldn’t get to. So they called Sam. Once at the wreck site, Sam gets all the details for what it is they are looking for. They claim that this ship holds a very special cargo that went down in the 3rd century B.C.

Agreeing to the terms and conditions set forth in the maritime laws, Sam calls a friend who has the equipment necessary to recover anything that might be of use. Within 3 hours a convoy of trucks rolls up to the docks and starts unloading all the equipment Sam asked for. 3 other people join Sam on the ship once the trucks are unloaded. Getting clearance the ship leaves the port and heads out to sea. It takes 4 days and 6 hours to reach the destination.

Once they arrive at the location, there is a lot of movement on board the ship. Mini subs are prepared for submersion. Diving gear is donned and special cameras are released into the waters. Setting up the video feedback system, they run a check on the cameras and make sure they are working properly. Satisfied that everything is ready, Sam climbs into one of the mini subs and launches. A tether is all that keeps him in contact with the ship. Submerging into the dark abyss, Sam flicks switches and pushes buttons. The area around him is light up bright as day. Watching out the forward window, Sam sees things he hasn’t seen in years. The memories the ocean can bring up.

Reaching a depth of 3 miles, Sam finally sees a ship unlike any other he has ever seen before. It’s different than anything on record. It almost looks like a log cabin with branches sticking out of it. But Sam thinks to himself that that is impossible. There is no way anything from land could possibly grow down here in the murky depths of the ocean. But it is right before him. There are leaves on the tree limbs. What are the chances that this ship is not what it seems? A million to one he thinks. But he was hired to do a job and the job comes first.

Circling the wreckage or lack thereof, he sees what looks like a simple ordinary drain plug resting on the ocean floor. Hmmm… I wonder he thinks to himself. What is that doing down here? Asking himself the million dollar question he thinks to himself, Why not? Getting within 15 feet of the plug, Sam deploys the armature that picks up items. Controlling it with precision and ease, he grabs a hold of the plug and tries to lift it up. It acts almost as if it weighed thousands of pounds. Not being able to lift it with just the armature, Sam accelerates in reverse and successfully lifts the plug off the ocean bottom.

What happens next is beyond belief and human comprehension. This little device just happened to be the safeguard of the universe. A small vortex appears and it actually looks like he had pulled the plug from a bath tub drain. As he watches the vortex grows in size and becomes bigger. Pretty soon the wreckage is sucked into the vortex and disappears. Sam feels a tug on the sub and accelerates backwards trying to get away from the vortex. Feeling the thing pulling him towards it, Sam gives the little sub everything that it has to give. Feeling the sub start backing away from the vortex it suddenly becomes monstrous in size.

Sam realizes there is not enough power in the sub to get him away from the vortex and to a safe distance. Within minutes the little sub is sucked into the vortex and the last thing anyone on board the ship hears is Sam screaming. The tether is snapped and the sub is no longer a part of the ship. A flurry of activity is seen on board the ship. The crew looks out over the water and sees a whirlpool starting just a hundred feet away from the ship. Klaxon horns sound and the ship is powered up and heads away from the phenomenon.

Sam comes to consciousness a little over an hour later. Thinking he blacked out from the depth, he looks out the forward window and sees something no man has ever seen before. A small city under the water or so it appears. Everything seems to be working fine until Sam realizes that something happened not too long ago. Now he remembers pulling the plug. He also remembers the vortex sucking him in. Turning the sub around, he looks around at his surroundings and only then does he realize something is not right and he is not where he was.

It was when he was rotating that he saw something huge just beyond his vision. It looked monstrous in size. What it was he could not tell. Until he gets a little closer to the object. Only when he feels the sub hit something hard and sees an eye the size of a large lake does he realize he is not in Kansa anymore. When something grabs the sub and he sees the water rushing by does he realize the God awful truth? Our world, Earth is but a toy in an alien races biological experiment. We are but something they created and Sam found out that life is not what it seemed.

Back on board the ship the vortex is sucking up every last bit of the water that we consider the ocean. Within hours the planet is as dry as the Mohave Desert and all life is being sucked up into the next phase of the experiment. So this is a fair warning, if you are out diving and see a drain plug, don’t touch it. Leave it alone. For you may be the cause of human extinction.
