Having A Hard Time With Whites?
Aug 16, 2002

These methods are for hand-was or machine-launder fabrics only. Test stain solutions on a hidden area, like a seam, to ensure garment won't be damaged.

PERSPERATION: Treat with a prewash stain remover or rub gently with soap and launder. For yellow stains, use a paper towel to apply ammonia or white vinegar and wait 15 minutes before laundering in hot water.

MUSTARD, KETCHUP, BARBEQUE SAUCE: Scrape away excess and douse stain with cold water. Soak in cool water with 1/4 cup laundry detergent for 15 minutes. Dab on a prewash stain remover and handwash or launder with all-fabric bleach.

FRUIT PUNCH, RED WINE: Immediately sprinkle salt on the stain. Apply a prewash stain remover or a mixture of clear dishwashing liquid and white vinegar, then handwash or launder with all-fabric bleach.

GREASE: Blot stain immediately to get rid of excess oil. Cover with baking soda for 20 minutes; brush off and repeat if necessary. For stubborn stains, apple clear dishwashing liquid, scrub between your fingers and rinse with hot water. Then treat with a prewash stain remover and launder.

LIPSTICK: Spot-treat with dry-cleaning solvent by placing the stain face down on a paper towel and blotting from the underside. Sponge with a mixture of equal parts ammonia and clear dishwashing liquid, then launder.

JUICE, BERRIES, AND OTHER FRUITS: While stain is still wet, douse with seltzer or cold water. Apply a little liquid laundry detergent, scrub between your fingers and rinse under hot running water (the stronger the flow the better). If stain is visible, cover with a paste of borax and warm water. Let dry, brush off and launder.
