Sept 18, 2003 For many homosexuals they believe they are being discriminated by people spreading hate or insighting violence against them. Many of these individuals believe marriage must be redefined to include them. Presently the major battle over same-sex marriage is taking place in Canada. Today homosexuals, the Federal Liberal government of Canada, paid government lawyers and the Supreme court of Canada and many members of parliament favour changing the definition of marriage. Yet not all Canadians favour changing the definition of marriage including many members of the Federal Liberals. The Alliance Party of Canada the official opposition party of Canada also opposes changing the definition of marriage. Recently they tried to stop the same-sex marriage Bill C-250 from being made law. They ended up losing the vote on this issue allowing the Liberals under Prime Minister Jean Chretien to redefine marriage in Canada. This has upset many of those that believe in a traditional marriage of one woman and one man. The term marriage is a cornerstone of public policy and ought not to be changed by the view of many Canadians. For those over age fifty-five 68% are against same-sex marriage. For those people age 18-34 about 66% favor same-sex marriage if you believe the polls which many do not. Gays and lesbians must certainly be rejoicing with everything going on in Canada but not not all appears as it seems to be on the surface. Now many individual Canadians are speaking out against same-sex marriage. In my county in Ontario Canada not only is my Liberal member of parliament against an amendment to the marriage act but in his riding over 400 people that contacted him only one individual was in favour of same-sex marriage. This proves that when you talk to individuals that polls are totally inaccurate or have been falsified by the pollsters or government itself. As you can see corruption and money talks louder than honesty in Canada. Wow what a shocker that was! The institution of marriage is as old as civilization and exists throughout the world and is for procreation and family values. The family unit of a father, mother and children is the basis for all society. This is not an issue for the courts to decide but rather for all Canadians to decide in a national referendum. Presently Prime Minister Jean Chretien has refused to allow Canadians to vote on this issue. He knows in fact that the polls are inaccurate and biased therefore he is against a referendum. He knows he would be soundly defeated making him look like a liar and a fool. Why does Jean Chretien continue to oppose traditional marriage? Is he in fact not what he appears to be? Does he have skeletons in his closet that he has been hiding for all these years? Some would say he is using the same-sex issue to take the minds of Canadians off the real issues. Canada has gone through SARS, west nile virus, a major power outage, major forest fires in British Columbia, beetles eating trees in Toronto, lack of healthcare, major problems with illegal drugs and pornography, etc. Instead he continues to force same-sex marriage through the courts using judges that he himself has appointed and has used for his own personal gain. This is the same man then finance minister who tried to take God out of the Canadian Constitution in 1980. Another reason he may be in favour of same-sex marriage is because in the province of Quebec where he lives 61% of Quebecers are in favour of this lifestyle. Marriage is an ancient rite, created by God as one man and one woman and He has never changed that nor will he ever. The sanctity of marriage cannot be redefined, remodelled, amended by the courts or members of parliament. God alone has defined marriage as the base rock for all society and civilization. If the original founders of Canada where alive today they would not be pleased at what is happening. I believe these great parliamentarians would stand and declare their righteous indignation at who far Canada has fallen as a nation. ------------ Stephen Winter resides in Halton Hills, Ontario in Canada.
