Sept 2, 2003 Nothing is more likely to drive one to a state on true depression of late than to hear many a meathead clamoring about how they detest extremism, and then notice the silence when it comes to denouncing terrorist groups like the ELF and the ALF (Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front as disrespectfully as begging possible). With the bombing of Chiron in Richmond the other day I’ve been a little more careful than normal. See, as a pharmaceuticals chemist (i.e. I design and make the drugs that save you from hemorrhaging out on the surgery table, make cystic fibrosis less than life threatening for sufferers (little children), psychotropic drugs that make your phobias tolerable, etc., ad nauseum) I am a target of these people because to find out whether the molecules I, and those like me, have spent years trying to develop actually work we tend to use animals. When my fiancée and I go to the mailbox I now wonder if the damn thing is going to go BOOM and leave us dead. Every turn of the car ignition I cringe fearing that these psychopaths have wired my VW with explosives. I have to worry about this because these eco-fundamentalists are willing to kill me to make a political statement. This is not paranoia. If one cared to look they could find news reports of a few years back of dozens of mail bombs being mailed to scientists. One very startling example of these terrorist tactics is not the bombing of Chiron, but instead the ELF and ALF sending death threats to the children of scientists that work for companies these Jihadists do not like. The BBC did a rather good report on this a few months ago. If one cared to look the reports by the NYT detailing scientists being blinded and maimed by letter bombs or letters with razor blades concealed in them, while not legion, are not fairy tales we tell to each other. Even more prolific are the reports, again, check the ‘progressive’ NYT, to see the prolific number of near misses and botched attempts there have been. Then there are the industrial events. Like the destruction of four years of a graduate students work and two acres of land at University of California, Davis in the ’99-00 school year. The bomb threats and bombing of places like Chiron, Aradigm (a company working on inhalable insulin of all things; where I worked in 2001), and a whole host of other pharmaceutical and biotech companies around the world, not to mention logging operations that have been booby-trapped. Instead of shredding these mentally ill groups we have so-called-progressives telling us in every op-ed, magazine article, television interview of late telling us we should truly quake in our boots because of men like John Ashcroft and Judge Moore down in Alabama. These men supposedly are ruining the country. Last time I looked Ashcroft and Moore were not out killing and destroying in the name of a higher power or ideal (Sternsrund are you and your hs posse listening: The progressives who are so in favor of the environment you seem to love so much are willing to kill to have their way. Maybe you should go and remind them that violence never solved anything, and that there is supposed to be a separation between church and state (no Gaianism in federal or state policies).). No, while real terrorists out to infringe upon life and liberty we are supposed to fear a potential police state. Progressives, liberals, what-ever-the-duece-label-you-claim- lately-to-avoid-being-compared-to-socialists would you please get it straight and go after the right people for once, or at least not be obstructionists or overly identify with these cowards who attack women, children, and those unawares? Would you please turn on these psychopaths before they kill a defenseless child or scientist WHO IS TRYING TO HELP? For some reason I think this plea will fall on deaf ears.
