Food Gathering, Thought Gathering
Nov 10, 2003

Take it home, heat it and eat it. But is it food? How do you know? No one knows anymore. Nearly all the soybeans are enhanced by genetic engineering and, of course, corn is, too. It’s very odd to someone who use to at least know where the product came from, the region at least, or in my case, the actual farmer. We hear that it’s all right to eat but is it?

Take Private Lynch. Was that real or staged? Or does anybody care? Twenty years ago I think people would have had a fit. They’d have written letters and complained to all of their congressmen and senators. No so any more. People don’t even vote any more.

Possibly hanging chads and Watergate have influenced us. Or maybe we aren’t patriotic any more. Except when we are watching television geared to make us feel patriotic. I don’t mean everyone. I do know people who are proud Americans, but not like I did when I was a kid.

What happened? Did we get too complacent that the government was “taking” care of us? Or did we just get too busy working to have all those things we wanted? Or did we just abdicate the authority to run our own country? Who wants to think about only 40% of the population votes for our leaders? Ever try asking people who their Congressperson is? They get very annoyed by such a question. Once I did write a letter to my Congressperson. I promise I did not write HIM a rude letter but a thoughtful, heartfelt one and when Congressperson So&So replied he was abrupt and rude to me, his constituent.

Where do these officials get off saying they refuse to answer a reasonable question? It’s like asking your doctor a question. They work for us, they serve us, and they are there because we need them. If we stop needing them, they will be out of a job.

So what if everyone decides someone else should serve the county, the state, and the nation. Who’d be in charge? Whoever had the money and the power to rule would run the country. Scary, huh?

I’m not saying anyone is greedy or ill advised or even mildly egocentric. I’m really saying that I don’t want to be sitting around on my seat and let an ambiguous individual make decisions that affect me because I was too lazy to vote. Or too lazy to complain. Or worst of all, afraid to speak.
