God Bless The ACLU!

By Peter Pike
June 1, 2004

If there is one thing that can be said for the ACLU, it’s that they are persistent. Once they get their mind set on a target, they go after it relentlessly. Using the legal system to bring down the wrath of the Almighty, the ACLU (one can only surmise it stands for: the Atheist’s Christian Liquidation Unit) is engaged in a crusade of righteous indignation and Pharisaical holiness to the religious pursuit of evangelizing the world to shun the evils of crosses. And God knows they need help.

That’s right, the ACLU is at it again, this time threatening lawsuits against the City of Los Angeles for the heinous crime of having a cross on the logo for the last 47 years. After all the negative news we’ve heard from Abu Graib, you’d think that the ACLU would actually be able to find some sort of issue that people actually care about, where someone’s civil liberties were actually being taken away. Or at least threatened.

But since those type of crimes don’t happen in the United States, the ACLU is instead going to force Californians to either pay more money in taxes to remove a symbol that roughly 18 people in the United States find offensive, or to pay more money in taxes so the city can go to court and fight this frivolous lawsuit. Obviously keeping your own money by avoiding unnecessary governmental expenses is not a civil liberty. For that matter, neither is the will of the people who voted and elected representatives who designed the logo. But who’s keeping track?

With more zeal than the Taliban showed blowing up statues of Buddha in Afghanistan, the ACLU knows that it has L.A. over a barrel no penance will get them through. The ACLU has already gotten other towns to cave by threatening court fees and forcing elected official to be in court instead of doing the job they were elected to (having elected officials that do their job isn’t a civil right, apparently). Soon, they will demand Los Angeles change its name because it refers to angels, obviously a religious symbol.

This would have a drastic effect on our sports world, and therefore cannot stand. Can you imagine the teams that will have to change their names? The NFL has the New Orleans Saints, baseball has the Anaheim Angels, the San Diego Padres (which sounds like it could be something sorta Catholic, so it ought to go just in case), and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (not to mention the Chicago Cubs which qualify as a religious “cult”). Even hockey gets in on the religious action with the New Jersey Devils. Basketball, thankfully, is spared this religious symbolism (unless the ACLU can somehow convince a court that the Golden State Warriors refer to the crusades, Quakers, or at least Brad Pitt.)

All this leads me to one logical conclusion that cannot be denied. We must live in a pretty damn (pardon the religious phrase) good country if the only civil liberty abuse people can complain about is the letter “t.”
