Apr 30, 2003 The UN no longer necessary? It seems that there are some voices in Washington that say the UN is no longer needed. Coalitions of the willing function just as good, if not better. That, at least, is the reasoning. For a non american, this is the devil speaking. A very scary concept. Basically it means that the USA can do what ever it wants in the world. They just need to find a number of countries that agree and the next war can be fought, and democracy can be spread all over the world. Of course by the USA model, with USA influence. Me being a european, should be happy with this. This type of agressive behaviour by the USA will strengthen Europe beyond the imagination. If the USA will get this agressive in the world, Europe will unite as never before. Since world war II europe has accepted the USA as the strongest nation in the world. Good aliances were created between the USA and European countries and everything was fine. In the days of Clinton (who was an excelent politician in the field of international politics) the USA was appreciated a lot for its foreign policy. Then Bush was elected, and 9-11 happened. Bush with his "you are either with us, or against us" policy is screwing up things big time. The ballance of power is completely gone. There is no ballance anymore, the USA is the strongest nation in the world and that is it. On it self that is not a bad thing, but now it seems that the arrogancy kicked in. The USA can rule the world with "alliances of the willing". The war in Iraq isn`t even over yet, and the next country is already being threatened. Siria could be next, and then who will be next? Iran probably. Let`s see what will happen if it gets to the point where Siria is actually attacked by a "coalition of the willing": Siria doesn't stand a chance in a war, that is obvious. However, Iran can be pretty sure that they will be attacked as well if Siria is attacked. So the big question will be: "Will they wait for that?" The answer is simple: "No, they will not wait!" They will have the choise between waiting AND, helping Siria and fight in Siria. Easy choise,.. get your own country devestated by war, or help somebody else and get their country devestated by war. Of course that will trigger world war 3. No other Arab state will allow this, so they all will get involved. No way the strongest nation in the world will win that war. The USA may be the strongest nation in the world, and compared to each individual country they are the stronger nation. But compare it to the rest of the world together,.... and you will find the USA is a mouse. Just irritate the rest of the world enough and the USA will find out how strong they really are. Just imagine the combined force of the european Union, China and Russia. And not just militairy power, but economical power as well, or especially economical power, I should say. The European union already started with building its own GPS satellite network. That is not because it is nice to have, but because they do not want to depend on the GPS system of the USA. And the more agressive the USA is, the more independ Europe will need to be. South America also is on its way to becomming more important in the economical world. Brazil is the 5th economical power in the world. The USA wants to create an all americas free trade area. But the Europeans as well are doing their best in South America. And with a lot more success, it seems, big companies like telefonica from Spain are doing very well in South America. Besides this, with the current situation in the world, they are not so much interested in the USA. Also it is widly known in the rest of the world, that economical integration with the USA really means economical assimulation,.... "You are either with us, or against us" , "You do it either our way, or you don`t do it with us". Guess what they prefere in South America. In conclusion,... it seems that the USA is heading in a direction that irritates many parts of the world. Being right is not the issue here. Being understood is. THAT is the function of the United Nations!!!! I hope so much that the USA won`t try to be right all the time. ------------ Peter Faber is Dutch and has recently moved to Brazil.
