If you want to watch something that is off the wall but can make you laugh even when you have had the worst day of your life? Then watch Spongebob Squarepants. When it first came on I was quite leery of it. I had been tired of the same junky cartoons that had been playing. One day when I had stayed home from school feeling miserable with a cold, I decided to watch it. Within minutes I was laughing so hard I cried.

Now this show isnt for everyone, but it isnt just for the kids. There is just as much adult humor in it and for that it keeps me coming back for more. The colors are bright, the voices are perfect, and the mannerisms these characters have reminds me of people I know. My son and I watch it together frequently, practically falling off the couch from cracking up. What I had seen first as a mindless ridiculousness turned into something that left me smiling and chuckling to myself later in the day.

The main characters are truly depicted from everyday people that you may know. Spongebob is the overly positive workaholic who values his friends and wants to please everyone. His pal is a pink starfish with the perfect voice to go along with him. He is not all there upstairs but once in awhile he will surprise you. They have a grumpy next-door neighbor who cant stand the noise they make, always trying to shut out their world. It reminds me of a grumpy old neighbor I used to have across the street. When I was eight, my friends and I would ride our bicycles and play hopscotch. Every once in awhile he would come out to do his yard and just glare at us. He hated the noise we made, even when we kept it down. There is a great crab, Krusty crab, who is the boss of a famous burger eatery. He is a miser with his money, completely driven by money and cant get enough of it. He is willing to sacrifice everyone elses good time even if it means staying open 24 hours a day. Believe me, I have known some misers. Here and there are a small cast of other characters each with their own charm, personality, and problems. Sandy the squirrel lives in an underwater dome. When she goes out she wears an astronaut uniform, but when others visit her in her home, they are the ones who must put a helmet of water on so they can still breathe. The creators have come up with wonderful names and the funniest predicaments I have ever seen.

This show as I said isnt just for the kids. With a host of celebrities making vocal appearances, there is a lot of fun and joking around. The episodes are only about twelve minutes long but the amount of fun entertainment they pack in is amazing. If you like the Simpsons, this isnt too far away from it. Again, not every program is someone elses cup of tea. I personally was never a Friends fan. With this show you really have to give it a chance, sit back, and not be too judgmental. Life shouldnt be taken too seriously as this show should not. That is the beauty of it. None of it really makes sense but its that nonsense that is a great break of reality.

I have too many favorite episodes to even try to give a synopsis on one, but rest assured, there is a reason it is out there and why the kids love it. The character is about fun and caring, having adventures and the need to fit in. It really depicts a lot of life in general, just in a colorful way that is non-threatening to the kids. They can identify with the things that Spongebob goes through and the same thoughts that go through his mind. Sure hes a sponge, but its just a drawing, with great expressions and a beaming smile, and that is what I like to see. There is enough on television that is serious and too reality based that doesnt interest me in the slightest. But if I can watch something that leaves me feeling good inside and makes my son laugh his head off, then it is worth it.

There are many great videos out there with Spongebob adventures that are worth checking out if you arent home to catch it. I personally am looking for the full length feature film of it, sure to be a blast. The creators dont try to make it anything but fun and I can tell they are having fun as well. Lately I dont think there has been a single cartoon show that has left such an impression on me as this one. You may not be an instant fan but just know this, your kids are gaining a lot more from it then you think, and its all good.
