Spirit and its Messages
Mar 21, 2003

Not too long ago I watched Spirit with my son, a beautifully done animation that was full of vivid colors and incredible landscapes. Watching the scenery and dazzling hues took my breath away. Here I was going on four months of solid winter and I hadnt seen a single color around me. If youve kept up with my articles I wrote about that woeful time in A little splash of color previously. I would have given anything to step into the television and be part of that spectacular imagery. It truly called out to me. The sky was a deep rich blue, green emerald grass, white foamy sprays of water along the teal currents of water. Deep purple and violet screamed from the sky and mountains, it was a masterpiece of visual art.

Now there are parts of this movie that are slow and its different to watch something that is mainly narrated, but it is also refreshing to know that not all animals can talk or break out into a choreographed song and dance. But there were many messages in this movie and I think it was up to the viewer to get what they needed out of it. For me it was several different messages all meshed in one. The first message was my need, my craving to taste the first drops of spring. More than anything I wanted to be alone, one person, in the middle of a vast piece of land, free to run and jump and just be. All around me I wanted to see waterfalls, mountains, trees, birds flying, and to feel the fresh crisp breeze floating around my shoulders, swaying my hair. I wanted to be a bird and soar the open skies and glide through the valleys and around the peaks. Basically, I was feeling terribly caged up and trapped, horrible cabin fever, and my very spirit was begging to be released and allowed to experience what it needs to live happily and free.

Another message was that in one way or another, we all have our own definitions of being free. Here was a wild horse that couldnt stand the thought of working or being ridden, he wanted to peruse the land and protect the others. Somewhere someone was always there to threaten it. Showing how railroads were cutting through the open land he knew as his home terrified him. I can only imagine how it really is for the animals out there, the land that is their true home. Someone would come along and misinterpret his intentions, deciding for him what was best. We all meet these kinds of people from time to time, trying to sway us from our own beliefs and walk the same path as everyone else. All you truly want to be is an individual with the right to do and think as you please. Other people are threatened by that way of thinking and it becomes a vicious cycle, ending up in situations we find ourselves in now, crime and war related issues.

Finally the message I saw in the movie was to not give up, continue searching and reaching for your dream. Be true to yourself and good to others. Trust in your faith and love and the love of your friends and family. Be happy with what you have and cherish those around you, because it isnt known when you could lose those things. When you do you may have the option to fight to get those things back, or you may have to find that there are new plans for you. Its like letting your spirit be your guide, backed up by your mind, heart, and soul. You completely encompass all the tools you need inside but it is best utilized when shared with others who may feel lost or need a boost.

The soundtrack to this movie is in short, moving. The background music is stirring and emotional. Bryan Adams sings all the songs and brings a true attitude to the feelings of the horse Spirit. This is a collection of powerful songs that can be enjoyed by both adults and children, just like the movie. I am certain that as my son watched it, he didnt quite grasp all these elements in the movie, and I wouldnt have at his age either. But what I took from it was more than a horse finding freedom, I was able to give him more than a voice, but an image in my mind of myself, wanting to not be stuck in one spot, wanting to experience all there is out there in the spectacular world we were given, and to roam this world with my loved ones, finding peace, balance, and adventure.

If you havent watched it, please do. I suppose you can just stare at the screen and be bored by it and not see it for its possibilities, but when you do I think you will find there are many hidden messages throughout and you might discover a new one for yourself. The movie is worth the time to watch and the soundtrack is worth the time to listen.
