Mar 18, 2003 I honestly think I am one of those people were born to complain. Please understand that I am actually a very appreciative person and am thankful for a great many things. I truly enjoy life and I dont take it too seriously for the most part. But I sure can find things to gripe about and lean quite heavily towards being a bit of a hypocrite some days. Take for instance, movie previews. Not too long ago I was quite content in renting videos since there is never anything on television that remotely interests me. However I couldnt stand the fifteen minutes of previews and junk that was subjected to before the movie. If I ordered a pizza with the family we usually had just about the whole thing eaten before the actual movie even began. On the other hand, occasionally it was nice to see a preview or two if the movie looked good and you never would have heard anything about it previously. But usually the previews lacked punch and in fact some of them made me question the movie I was about to watch. Now that I have a DVD the basic videotape isnt as interesting as I have become spoiled. I have noticed there are very few if any previews before the movies on DVD and now I have to admit to sort of missing them. Doesnt that sound ridiculous? I guess you just cant please me in that particular category. One or two previews arent terribly irritating but too many and I lose interest quickly. I dont understand it any better than you do. Another great example of things to complain about would be phone messages. While its great to not be a slave to your phone and be able to avoid such people as bill collectors and even certain members of your family, I must say it becomes annoying when half the people dont even bother to leave you a message or you have to waste the time scanning around and deleting calls that dont mean anything to get to the ones that you care about. Call waiting is also another example of a bad idea. I got it one time, and thought it was great for a couple weeks. After that it drove me nuts to have someone else trying to interrupt the call I was already on. I realized quickly that I was no longer putting the focus and attention on the person I was speaking to. Friends shouldnt have to be placed on hold so you can decide whether the other person who called is more important. I just felt it wasnt a very enjoyable service and quit paying for it. However, it came in handy once when I was talking to someone who was mad at me and I was able to accidentally hang up on her and use the excuse it must have happened when I switched over and made the other person talk to me for hours as my first friends redialed every ten minutes. In case you are wondering, or even if you arent, we are no longer friends. The final thing Id like to complain about with you today would be about movie theaters. First off they are expensive and should you want to eat something, you can expect to work overtime for a few days to redeem yourself, especially important if you spent your money on a horrible movie. Secondly if you are not eating then you are very aware of everyone eating around you. Thus begins the battle of will. Its almost like they are pressuring you into eating something. Listening to the incessant sounds of munching popcorn, noisy candy wrappers, and people slurping pop can sometimes deter the willpower of a dieter. I kind of laughed when I found out you have to pay for water and if they catch you with food then you can get it taken away from you. As far as I am concerned, if I have to spend half a days salary there, I ought to be able to eat a steak if I want! Now like renting videos, half the time there are way too many previews and the unfortunate thing is you cannot fast forward at the movies. While this works if you are in the concession line, it is boring if you got there early, thinking everyone else would be there too. One time I was running late and decided not to stress too much, figuring I would have a few extra minutes before the movie began. Another example when previews can work. However, I arrived when the crucial part of the movie had just ended, only five minutes into it, and the whole movie was based on that opening sequence. This is typical for my luck in life. Now, I can always sit back and laugh about these things later, so that is a good sign, but it doesnt make me complain any less. As far as I know you are reading this and wish you hadnt and now have something new to complain about. But thats okay, its good to things off your chest, it leaves so much room for the new things.
