To Wrap Or Not To Wrap
Mar 13, 2003

Everyone likes to save money. Sometimes when you save a few bucks you lose out on the quality of something and that can really create extreme irritation. Maybe you are one of the few who are lucky enough not to have experienced this rather unpleasant scenario, but I can assure you I am a survivor of it and have learned my lesson.

On my grocery list I had placed saran wrap near the top. For whatever reason, I continuously walked past the aisle and came home without it. This was distressing as I frequently use it to cover dishes of food, wrap sandwiches for my son and partner, and use it to heat things up in. Now, all was not lost, I did have a box with half a roll left of saran wrap but it wasnt the right kind and as far as I was concerned was the cheapest imitation I have ever used. This stuff lacked punch, or should I say lacked the ability to do its job. If you covered a bowl, it didnt stay. Did it cover the sandwiches you ask? Well, after tightly wrapping it around three or four times and sometimes having to go in for another sheet of reinforcements, if you call that good, then I guess it covered the sandwiches. It lacked substance, stickability, (yes, a word that is underlined in red when typed on word document) and overall staying power.

Not only that, I spent half my time unable to find the beginning after the last time I used it. Was it worth all the irritation by saving ninety-eight cents? No way. There are just some things that are worth the extra few dollars. Quality holds a lot of value.

Now I also am partial to buying Ziploc bags that zip shut. I dont care for the fold over kind and I refuse to buy the kind that I guess you tie up in a million knots to keep the food fresh and from drying out. I can say this because I have tried them all. Literally, I have purchased every kind of food wrapper available at a store near you, trying to find the ultimate in keeping my food together. Its hard enough trying to keep myself together! I certainly dont have the time to worry about covering food.

The two brands I trust the most are Ziploc and Reynolds. They seem to be of good quality and work well, living up to their image and standards. I even like the containers you can store food in, except unless you have a big enough lunchbox and you bought the right size containers, they can be just as much of a nuisance as foldable sandwich bags. If either one of those companies asked me to do a commercial for them, I would willingly oblige. To help spread the word and save people from the troubles I have faced, it would be an honor and privilege.

My mornings tend to be very hectic. I make lunches for two people and I literally feel like a madwoman sometimes on how speedy I become. Everything is in its place so I am not rummaging around with my eyes only half open. With only the sandwiches left to make, I take a deep sigh and then tackle the imitation wrap. Regardless what mood I woke up in, the mood has been thwarted and I am left agitated and peeved. I battle with the box, trying not to cut myself and finding the edge to pull from. Sometimes it rips apart before I have a nice clean sheet and that is a fate worse than death. Once I have the desired length of sheet, I must quickly get it to the desired location or risk it crinkling and folding up which takes more time than I have. Sure, I know what you are thinking, I could get up earlier, but that wouldnt solve the problem at all, I assure you. The one thing I can count on with the imitation wrap, it will not accidentally get stuck on something else the way the honest to goodness Saran Wrap can. That is just not something I ever have to worry about. Finally I claim victory as I wrap the sandwiches a few times and with a few sheets and close up the lunchboxes and work on breakfast. It is still hours before my good mood resurfaces. I guess it is good everyone else leaves.

So once again I will add the proper wrap to the shopping list this week, and well see if I poke my head down the correct aisle, shrug my shoulders and say nope, dont need anything down here as I have for the last month. Such a creature of habit! I guess that is all I have to say on this subject. Thats a wrap!
