Apr 14, 2004 What exactly is the purpose of Presidential candidate Ralph Nader? This clown has been hanging around in the media since the 1960s, when his only claim to fame was destroying a perfectly good car; The Corvair, a car that was economical, not a deathtrap as far as the owners of them I knew in the 60s. They all swore that it was a fine car, a little lightweight for its time, but posed no danger to anything except Ralph Nader's upcoming career. The public bought his story; hook, line and sinker, ruining a perfectly good car for the sake of a then unknown person of questionable motives. I noticed he never attacked the German VW, or the rat traps made in France, the Renault, I suppose he was anti-American even back in those days. Since then, I have no idea why he gets his name in the papers or on television. He runs for president every now and then; gathering votes from people that probably can't decide if they lean left or right. He's a good source of confusion for these people. br>Now he is trying to raise alarms about the revival of the draft for military service. He seems to have a crystal ball that no one else can see into or understand. Well first of all; I believe the draft never should have been halted, I think everyone living in this nation is obligated to serve this country in some capacity. Be it military, community service (not court ordered), medical assistance training, etc. By doing this, we would have a better- educated citizenry, as they would learn skills they may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn. People would also learn respect and discipline, other than hanging out on the street corners and playing midnight basketball. I was caught in the draft in 1967, I was leading a life I liked, I met the girl (now woman) who I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with and grow old together, I had a decent job, and a decent car, all very important to a 19 year old. I received my "Greetings" letter in July of '67; this turned my life upside down. Did I flee to Canada or Sweden? No! Did I rush to enroll in a college to get a deferment? No! My country called me for my help, and I proudly answered that call. I wasn't happy that my life was being disrupted, but I knew then, and still know that freedom is not free. You have to pay for it in one form or another. Mr. Nader seems poised to start draft resistance centers, and organize protests to help people avoid the draft. If this is Mr. Nader's idea of defending our country, I suggest he step down now as a presidential candidate, as, at this time, the country needs defense more than ever. I watched Nader being interviewed right after the attacks of September 11, 2001. He actually said that if he were president, he would not retaliate in any way; he'd instead try diplomatic sources to solve the problem of more than three thousand people being murdered. This is not my ideal of a leader in time of war, unless of course it's France, but definitely not the United States. Nader seems to want to apologize to the world for our accomplishments and successes. If Nader ever gets elected, it's time for all of us to find a new island and start over; he'd have us in third world status in no time. Maybe he should go back to trashing cars, not in the press, but try to find a junkyard to hire him; he seems good at that sort of thing. He sure isn't ready to be president. ------------ About the author: Mike Romer is a politically incorrect, disgruntled resident of New Jersey and thinks a lot of people need their heads screwed on properly.
