Sex Selection Outsourced to Science?
Mar 7, 2004

Every new technology affects everybody, eventually. (Sorry, that’s the poetic alliteration in me.)

Here is the definition of Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis: This technology unites the female eggs with the male sperm in a laboratory dish (in a romantic way) where doctors can analyze the resultant embryos (not ye fetuses) and select boys or girls. (Oh! Gee! Do you mean before even fetus hood, we can discover the sex of an embryo?) Then embryos of the desired gender are implanted in the potential mom, The rest are discarded (aborted?). Success rate in sex selection 100%. Cost is between $10 and $15 thousand dollars. Isn’t technology wonderful?

Man has taken on the “outsourcing” of sex selection for building families. I guess they all believe God is too busy taking care of places like Haiti, or Iraq, or the New York State Public School System to worry about such a trivial matter as “Did you want a boy or a girl?” Well, now technology can guarantee a baby’s sex 100% of the time! But, wait a minute!

“Because the practice [of sex selection] is becoming more widely available, the Council on Bioethics will soon release a report recommending how the government should regulate reproductive science, including sex selection.” WHAT! Wait a minute! We don’t need no stinking regulations! If a 13-year old can get an abortion without parental notification and gay men can commit sodomy in the privacy of their shared bedroom, then how can anyone even consider regulating how I want to have a child?

The government is going to regulate sex selection? I thought only the Communist Chinese pulled stunts like that! I know all I have to do is get Evangelical Christianity to say they approve of this because it allows babies to be born instead of aborted. That will bring out all the liberal abortionists forces and squash sex selection like a bug on the tarmac.

It will be interesting to see what form this “regulation” might take. Will the government allocate babies by sex and then by percentage, allocate babies by race? I would like to see some minorities in America become majorities so I can start receiving some of the benefits of being a minority.

The day my wife and I decided to begin making babies we prayed to God for a baby girl. Our first child was a daughter. When we decided to expand our family we prayed for a boy. God delivered to us twin sons. I will admit we were not as insistent in our prayers in the next two attempts to even things up. God knew best though and gave us two more fine sons (Heh, Heh!)

Now, with my daughter producing grandbabies, I can know the sex in a dish if I want. Heck! If I want 10 granddaughters I can guarantee that outcome every time and I don’t have to pray at all. I don’t have to utter one itty bitty word. I don’t have to bother God any more. Ain’t technology wonderful?

No!

Technology is not always wonderful. Sometimes it is very confusing. Sometimes it can do more harm than good. There is a lot of harm that can eventually come from this technology, when you might think to combine it with cloning technology. Imagine creating full grown faux humans in lab dishes! Scary stuff this idea of sex selection. It gets even scarier when contemplating same sex couples wanting to select same sex children. Just remember: Every man that ever tried to be God screwed it up and got a lot of good people killed.

I guess I’ll just remain in my confused state on this one. If sex can be determined as a lab- dished embryo; how can that be a boy or a girl 100% of the time; and yet, a growing fetus, in a womb, Not be a boy or a girl at any time; right up to and including a partial birth abortion? The mind boggles!
