The Kyoto Cash Cow
Dec 14, 2003

Last Tuesday I read an article about Russia backing out from signing onto the Kyoto Protocol. President Putin knows this agreement will destroy many of the benefits of his current economic reform planning that are just now turning his nation around. He instituted a flat tax last year that has helped his economy grow at a moderate rate and has increased revenue without being an extra burden on the poor and middle classes.

Kyoto would end that. The amount of money Russia would have to expend annually to comply with the Kyoto agreement would necessitate a tax increase. One of Putin’s top economists is quoted: “ In its current form, the Kyoto Protocol places significant limitations on the economic growth of Russia.”

This is the very same reason the United states will not sign on to Kyoto. The Protocol “sets targets for countries to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, which are seen as a key factor behind global warming.”

Forget for a moment that there are umpteen studies that have determined the myth of global warming. This Protocol will ensure economic stability of all the industrialized nations that will never go above the set targets because the Protocol will always find America and Russia at fault for any supposed or suspected greenhouse gas increase in the world. Then America and Russia will be prompted to apologize to the rest of the world by paying fines and reparations to the poor nations who suffer any natural disaster attributable to global warming.

For example: Six pages of the paper later I am reading: “Global Climate Change a Reality”. Two scientists telling the world “there is no longer any doubt that human activities are changing the Earth’s atmosphere and climate.” The study by these two scientists naturally opposes the findings of the last 12 studies saying just the opposite. Anyway, the call is for “more international cooperation, (Like Kyoto?) to mitigate global climate change or the “likely” result will be more heat waves, drought, wild fires, etc.

On the same page was “Ski Resorts Imperiled By Global Warming, study says”. IMPERILED?! HUH! Anyway, the bottom line on this one was that sometime in the next 30 to 50 years the snow line in Austria may (yes, MAY) rise another 600 to 900 feet. In other words, in 50 years, people may have to walk 1000 additional feet to get to the snow in Austria. People may not want to pay the higher ski lift fees to travel 3 minutes longer to reach snow. Then what will happen is that Austria will sue America and Russia under the Kyoto Treaty to recover lost ski resort revenue. Dear Taxpayer, please bend over and spread your cheeks.

Nope. Like the disproportionate amount of cash we spend annually to support the United Nations, Kyoto would soon become another “cash cow” for the lesser industrialized. Best to stay out of the Protocol. If Russia decides to spend her money for the little PR boost a signature might gain? Fine. America, with the most stringent environmental protections in the world already, does not need the addition of Kyoto.
