Sept. 19, 2004 One of my all time favorite commercials is the “Tastes Great! Less Filling!” brawl conducted by two “ladies” in a restaurant next to a fountain; in an argument over a brew I do not drink, so I won’t mention. What reminded me today (Sunday, 19 Sep) of that particular ad was a front page headline in the “Stars and Stripes” touting: “Miss America shows some skin, cuts talent for a livelier show”. The actual article on page 18 proclaimed: “Miss America offers more skin, less talent.” The producers of the “Miss America” pageant are trying to drum up more viewers; so the formula has become more skin to the second power equals more viewers, hopefully times four. Apparently, no one really cares if Miss America can sing, dance, play an instrument or recite poetry. As long as she looks great in a skimpy, two-piece, we’ll deal with all that talent stuff off camera. Well, beauty must be only “skin” deep with the producers of the pageant. If viewer numbers do rise, even marginally, I can just see what the future will bring to the Miss America Pageant. There will be Miss America Wet T-Shirt Contests; or perhaps the Miss America Victoria Secrets Lingerie Contest; or perhaps the best two out of three falls Miss America Mud Rassling Contest; or better yet, whipped cream and Jell-O Rassling. Whatever we can do to get “more skin” and “less talent” as long as the viewer numbers keep going up anything is possible for Miss America. Hey! Maybe the CBS News Division should look into this. Well, Michael McCrae thinks America is better than that. Michael McCrae believes there is at least some morality left. So Michael McCrae is going to leave this here (until after the election) as a reminder to all of what John Kerry and John Edwards believe the Real America to be. They believe America's "heart and soul" resides in the "X-rated sexual innuendo" of Whoopi Goldberg. You can draw your own conclusions.
