Nov 14, 2003 Once upon a time, a while back, I read a magazine article that discussed the possibility of peace between the nation if Israel and the group known collectively as the Palestinian Authority. The article made a lot of sense. In fact, it was very common sensical in its assertion that peace could easily be achieved if only one thing were to happen. The Palestinians and all other radical terrorist organizations only had to put down their weapons to end the violence. If you look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with open eyes and a proper historical understanding, you see that agression has always come from the Arab nations. In the case of the Palestinians, Yassar Arafat has never gone back on his word to see all Palestine in the hands of the Arabs and all Jews either evicted or destroyed. If the radical Arab elements would just simply accept the fact that Israel deserves a right to exist in its own historic homeland as a nation, they could all stop stressing themselves out and go home and live peacefully. Since 1948 Israel has only acted in self defense and has returned virtually all the territories conquered in their defensive wars against their radical Arab agressors. I would like to know why the United Nations has not played a greater role in the protection of tiny Israel. Why does the UN only discuss sanctions and condemnation against Israel when they go on the defensive? Why aren't Syrian sanctions discussed when terrorists fire rockets into Israel from Lebanon? Why aren't Palestinian sanctions discussed when homicide bombers supported by Palestinian terrorist organizations continue to kill innocent civilians? If Hamas, el'Fatah and Islamic Jihad put away their weapons and went home tomorrow, they could begin using the millions of dollars America sends the Palestinian Authority, not on weapons, but on building infrastructure, schools, hospitals and factories. Does anyone believe Israel would attack any group from any nation that had made its collective mind up to stop the destruction? I keep hoping that these terrorists would just go home, make love to their wives, plant their crops, start their businesses and raise their children not to strap explosives on their bodies. They have to know that America is not going to go away. We have brought the war to them because we do not want their war here. There are prople who would blame America and Israel for all that is happening in this terrorist filled world. We've read the articles and heard the hype. It the terrorists went home tomorrow and called the U.S State Department and told us the Jihad was over, we would not brag of victory. We would breathe a collective sigh of relief and start a major search for normalcy. Sadly, that will not happen until the entire world agrees that no terrorist may have a safe harbor. Every country must accept a role in anti- terror. President Bush said it initially and succinctly when he said a nation is either on the side of civilized society or a supported of terrorism. I hold out hope that America has complete success in the multinational discussions on the North Korean situation. If cooperation is achieved in this diplomatic process, perhaps the nations involved (China, Russia, South Korea, Japan and the U.S.) will be able to unite on other fronts to diffuse all major terrorist activity. Only when terrorist organizations are deprived of their monetary resources and weapons supplies will any real progress toward peace be possible. An alliance of the above mentioned countries with continued help from our current coalition could form a formidable enough obstical for any terrorist organization to overcome. ------------ About the Author: Independent, Conservative, Christian.
