Nov 2, 2003 The American Heritage Dictionary defines the word ‘coward’ as “One who shows ignoble fear in the face of danger or pain”. The problem is that I’m not sure who to pin this label on. Oh, sure it’s easy to call the bombers in Iraq cowards. They disguise bomb filled vehicles as ambulances, police cars, and indiscriminately blow up who ever might be in the area. These attacks are revealing to the world what kind of people they really are. When they were unable to prove themselves honorable in the arena of battle they resorted to the only means that they could to try to inflict any sort of harm on their supposed enemies. Kill innocents. Wow. How noble. How pathetically, moronically, cowardly noble. I’m sure these ‘martyrs’ for their ‘cause’ will be richly rewarded when they end up where ever they go when they do finally die. Personally, I can’t believe that it’ll be somewhere nice with plenty of virgins. I think that it’ll probably be somewhere where they will need about a five billion SPF sun block. Because I grew up in Europe and have met and dealt with a variety of peoples and cultures I have always tried to defend and rationalize the different mindsets that some cultures have that would seem totally alien to those of us that grew up in a western culture. But there are some things that are just inexcusable. There can be no rational debate with these people. The U.N. paints such a pretty picture of dealing with all types of cultures, but trying to debate sensibly with a group of amoral sociopaths is a futile gesture. (It would be similar to trying to argue the point of personal responsibility to a bunch of democrats) If the only thing they can understand is death, then I say give them as much of ‘that’ commodity as they can handle. And then give them some more. What also brought the word ‘coward’ to mind was the democratic debate Sunday night. I’ve tried to like one or two of the candidates. I’ve tried to honestly see their point of view. But I can’t. Their outright lies and distortions of policy have made them the nations latest laughing stock. When is just one of these candidates going to be brave enough to stop with the rhetoric and just tell the truth? I’m just waiting for one or more of them to start blaming the wildfires occurring in California on the president. (Maybe CBS can do a quick rewrite and pin this on Ronald Reagan as well). As much deceit and lying goes on in the TV show “Joe Millionaire” to make these bunch of fools the next new Fox series “Democratic Joe Honesty”. And guess who we have on the other hand. We still have a former president whose legacy is probably going to be a chain of naughty bookstores and dirty video rentals. About the only person or group of people that have defied the term ‘coward’ has been the president, his administration and the men and women who are fighting over in Iraq. They have taken upon themselves the strenuous task of taking the fight to these pathetic wimps in the Middle East. They have taken the fight to the cowards’ own front yards. They have faced the accusations of those cowards in our own senate who would have chosen the option of hiding from these punks and letting the U.N. try to talk their way out of a war than to actually try to stop them. Does anyone really understand what is happening here? For the first time in our history we, as Americans, are going to one of the harshest regions on the planet. These populations have never known peace. The have lived countless centuries in tribal and racial warfare. And our president has decided to do something about it. If that doesn’t take guts, then I don’t know what does. Here is a man who is creating a legacy of democracy and being true to his word. Here is a man who is willing to send people in harms way. I started this piece by defining the word coward. I think that by ending this article by illustrating the word bravery I have clearly pointed out certain hypocrisies that are ongoing in our media, and houses of politics. Whether you like the man or don’t, whether you voted for him or not, it doesn’t take a genius to see the differences (that I feel) go way beyond simple party lines. If there is anyone out there who wishes to challenge this man in next years’ election then they should take a page out of his book. If you took a page from Bill Clintons’ book, I would be afraid of what would be on it. ------------ About the author: Mike Russell is a Ninja/fighter pilot/ astronaut with x-ray vision who likes to make up stuff about the author when his wife isn’t looking.
