June 6, 2003 Just yesterday the Senate voted to give ALL families a child tax cut. This check will be for $400 for each child in the family, and affecting 6.5 MILLION families. How the Republicans could have the nerve to cut these people out will forever astound me! The middle-income will recieve a credit of $1,000, more obviously because they pay more money, but earlier the Republicans cut the lower-income people ENTIRELY because they did not pay enough! These families work hard, they pay taxes, so there is absolutely NO reason to cut them out, in any way whatsoever. Throughout my life I have seen Republicans claim to be for all people and just throw the lower-income people into the fire and say 'too bad'. NOW, the pressure is all on the House. Hopefully the GOP down there has just enough sense as the GOP in the Senate, and decides to help ALL children as well. I was never for this huge of a tax cut at all, and I would have gone for more of a well-rounded smaller one, but this not being the case, it is obvious that we should include all people in the cut. The Republicans seem to like these huge tax cuts when our country is in debt, but then can't seem to find any extra money to help the poorer people, and this is a perfect example. The Senate voted 94-2 in support of the measure, and one of the dissenting was my own, Oklahoma's own Nickles. He said something which competely confused me: "Do we want the government to write bigger checks?" Well, as a Republican, and supporting the tax cut, one which is in the HUNDEREDS OF BILLIONS, he is asking the question of the government writing big checks. I am sorry, but with the $350 billion tax cut, I'd say that is a big check to write, one he was in SUPPORT of. Totally confused me, and took me off guard. Thank goodness the Senate Republicans decided to be nice and smart and good and pass this child tax credit to include all children. Their reason for cutting it out in the first place does not even make sense. A full-time minimum wage worked will barely make over $10,000 in an ENTIRE YEAR, and there is any reason to cut the person out of credit, when there is a family and children involved. I am SO SO glad that we have us Democrats out there to help the lower-income people, and ALL the people, since it was us that included the child tax cut in the first place. ------------ About the author: Matthew Stensrud is a high school student who loves politics and life.
