June 4, 2003 Our judicial system is so very important. Not only do they decide small divorces or speeding tickets, but murders and whether or not laws or constitutional or not. I find this to be so very important, and a strong part of our government than most at first presume. Congress makes laws. We all know that. But when we think about it, the laws end up in the judge's hands. The judicial courts will decide whether or not they are even constitutional if someone thinks they are not, which happens often. Lately, Congress has tried to pass a law prohibiting the burning of the U.S. flag. It has been passed in the House too many times to count, but not in the Senate lately. The times it has been put into law, the courts just throw it out, for being unconstitutional. And that is true, it is unconstitutional. I know ceremonies where we burn flags, as respect to our country and state, as they get old. Now I think burning the flag in general is morally wrong and degrading, but legal. Now that we have all agreed that the judicial system is incredibly important, let's talk about the current problems in Congress in approving judges. We all know how important judges are. When they are approved by an incredibly slim margin, as in 10-9 or 51-50, I begin to worry. If it is so hard to even get about half the congressmen to vote for a judge, is he really talented enough and ready for the job? When almost half the Senate or House votes against a nominee, I question his ability to do the job, one of MUCH importance. Filibusters can be annoying. So why include them? Simple: for keeping things or people SO controversial, they can barely collect a majority, from continuing on. Whether or not the Republicans are in control, or the Democrats, I think that filibusters should be there. While these things can go on for awhile or forever, I would much rather have that then a bias inapt judge be approved and mess up completely! Well, I think this makes sense. Some things should have most or more people agree that this person or bill is a good idea. Judges are one of them. They make so so many decisions I feel they should be taken very seriously. My opinion on the judges themselves will be coming soon. I bet you just can't wait. ------------ About the author: Matthew Stensrud is a high school student who loves politics and life.
