June 22, 2003 Music. Music is everywhere around us. It is what we hum, it's what we sing, it's what we play, it's what we dance to, it's what the commercials have in the background, it's the theme song for a televisions show, music is everywhere. Thank goodness I have music, thank goodness music is there to help us when were down or to understand others. Music is not just notes. Music is not just clunking notes on a piano or playing pitches on a saxophone or hitting them on a xylophone. Music is so much more. Music is feeling which cannot be expressed in any words and cannot be explained in any way. Music is the innermost feelings of our heart. I just came back from a week-long piano festival, where I heard, and was a part of, many young musicians who played the piano. But some do not yet understand music. They play the notes perfectly and call it quits. Music is emotion, feeling, happiness, sadness, craziness, everything we can imagine and further. Trust me, there is a huge difference between understanding the notes and just playing them. When someone understands a piece and its emotions, you can hear the emotions crawl out of the piece and swirl around you. You can hear the crying of a poor man or hear the quirkiness of a clown. Everyone can become a musician. Whether or not you can play the most techincal piece or the piece everyone loves is not the questions. A musician is one who expresses the piece with emotion and sends that emotion and those feelings into everyone in the audience. Music is not just there to listen to and clap for and leave. Music is your help, your guidence, your happiness, your joy. My life would not be the same without music. Believe it or not, your life would be different too, very different. Whether it is just the difference you notice on television, or trying to live without your guitar or violin or piano, life would never be the same. The people who seeked life in music and understanding in music would suffer, we all would suffer. What once brought joy and happiness or let emotions run free which could never be interpreted into words would disappear. Pick up an instrument. Play music. Live music. Be music. ------------ About the author: Matthew Stensrud is a high school student who loves politics and life.
