Feb 6, 2004 I’m almost in favor of letting Pete Rose get on the Hall of Fame ballot just so we don’t have to hear about it anymore. If global warming is real, then someone needs to explain to me this year’s brutal winter in the Northeast; it’s been so bad that I’m considering a move to Alaska. When I see palm trees growing along the New Jersey Turnpike, then you can come talk to me. Speaking of winter, why do drivers of SUV’s and other tall vehicles feel no compunction to clear the snow and ice off of their roofs? I can’t tell you how many sheet-of-ice greeting cards I’ve received on the highway this year. In my opinion, we should leave the cell phone users alone and pull over the Suburban slinging glaciers all over the road. How can the Democrats, after years of eviscerating our intelligence apparatus and deriding it as a “relic of the Cold War,” so quickly point the finger for any failings that may have contributed to 9/11 or the Iraq War? I have to laugh at the suggestion by many Democrats that President Bush is governing from the “far right.” This is a guy who hasn’t vetoed a single spending bill, signed a huge Medicare entitlement in the prescription drug bill, and wants to increase education spending by 48%. Other than tax cuts and the partial birth abortion ban, Bush hasn’t exactly given conservatives much to cheer about. I hate to admit it, but Bush has some explaining to do on the war. You can’t change the rationale for invasion from “firm” evidence of WMD’s to “Oops! Well, it was a good deed anyway.” I was a believer, but am having some doubts. Find a bottle of anthrax in a fridge somewhere – anything! But find it. People who trumpet the cause of “open space” are usually the same ones who demand more “affordable housing.” These are conflicting concepts: the easiest way to make more housing affordable is to build more housing. The entitlement mentality has officially gone berserk. In my home state of New Jersey, the Assembly (lower house) is proposing to attack crippling malpractice insurance rates with…get this: a subsidy for the state’s doctors. Go figure that one out. For those of you who were not bothered in the slightest by the strategy behind lawsuits against Big Tobacco, Big Guns, and Big Macs, this just in: brewers Anheuser Busch and SABMiller are being sued in a Los Angeles Superior Court for targeting minors in their advertising. Hate to say I told you so… For the first time in a long time, the actual Super Bowl game outshone the commercials - weak offerings this year. I won’t even touch the Janet Jackson halftime stunt, but I have to ask what the heck is Justin Timberlake doing in anything related to a football game? Get that kid off my screen! I assume I’m not the only one who laments the passing of the football season? With no more football and the holidays in the rearview mirror, the next two months are always a rough stretch. (I’ve already gone through the racks at my movie store so thoroughly that I will be reduced to giving the “Ernest” movies a second look.) If you couldn’t tell, I’m sick of winter. That groundhog out in Punxsutawney had better get with the program next year. ------------ About Matthew Bastian: Recovering socialst, part-time drummer, long-suffering Brewers fan, and all-around beach hound, Mr. Bastian lives in central New Jersey.
