My E Mail Abortion Debate With A Liberal
Aug 27, 2003

I had an interesting conversation, via e mail, with a liberal, who, at first, had written to tell me what a moron I am. But, we soon became engaged in a very informative debate.

The topic was abortion.

We corresponded over several e mails. As always, these are direct quotations in context. Nothing has been paraphrased or colored in anyway.

Lanny...I just hope you are not stupid enough to buy the anti-abortion rhetoric of conservative politicians.

I've never claimed to be smart. Only devastatingly good-looking.

Republican candidates spew the anti-abortion line at election time in order to acquire those single issue Christian votes. That is the TOTAL extent of the republican partys effort on the abortion issue...on the anniversary of Roe Wade, there was a pro-life gathering in Washington. Bush sent a brief tape-recorded message. That's it.....LOL He couldn't even go down the block and attend personally.

I agree. Conservatives should be more active. The excuse "abortion is 'the law of the land'...what can we do?" doesn't cut it. Republican Congressmen, and President Bush, should be as front and center in the media as the pro- abortionists are. There should be a massive media campaign pushing adoption, teenage abstinence, and the Baby Moses Law.

Abortion rights were instituted under a liberal court and has been consistently upheld by conservative courts as well. The current Supreme Court has 7 republican appointees out of 9.

Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia are the only conservative judges. Justices Sandra Day O'Connor, Andrew Kennedy and David Souter are decidedly moderate, not conservative. John Paul Stephens, Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Stephen Breyer are the liberal justices. So what if Republicans nominated them? If they don't vote conservative, how can you call them conservative judges?

You are haivng difficulty here. We have had republican presidents appoint Justices, evidently not caring how they would rule on abortion. That would fall under the heading of NOT SERIOUS about the matter. Or possibly realizing that abortion must be kept legal. Those are the only two choices, sorry.

"We have had republican presidents appoint Justices, evidently not caring how they would rule on abortion." Exactly how it should be. So, why is abortion currently the litmus test of deciding whether a Presidential judicial nominee is confirmed or not? For the rest of it, it's definitely food for thought. It's an angle I never have considered.

Lanny, liberals are serious about this issue. You can bet your sweet a** that when Clinton appointed a Justice he made sure ahead of time that they were pro-choice...........

Why is abortion so important to liberals? It is the number one issue for NOW, not spousal abuse, rape prevention or breast cancer research.

It's an important issue for EVERYONE................Almost all of the republican pro-life position is a fraud. You really don't expect me to take your pro-life position seriously do you? When YOUR 15 year old daughter comes home pregnant by some black guy on the high school basketball team, THEN we will find out your true position on abortion."

It seems to be awfully important to you that a Black man is impregnating by imaginary daughter. I guess that is how you see conservatives, as racist "Jesus freaks."

No, not at all....It's just one example.........As far as mature women using abortion as a form of birth control, I can't say that thrills me, but it's the way it is...All that anti-abortion legislation will do is force the absolute poorest women to bring their pregnancies to term That's just plain stupid.

Are you considering the Baby Moses Laws, that 45 states have? It says if you get pregnant, you can give the child up to that state within 60 days of birth. So if my imaginary 15 year old gets pregnant, she can carry the child to term, and then give the baby up to a state agency, if she chooses to do so. Not to mention adoption.

That would be an option for you. You may choose that because of your moral opposition to abortion, although we would not know what you would really do until the situation actually happened..... What I'm wondering is why you want MY option of abortion denied by law. The best answer is for people who do not want to have abortions, not to have them, and the people that want them have access to them. As far as moral judgement, leave that to God, if there is a God. The pro-life people should stay out of the courts and lawmaking, and focus on ways they can make a difference otherwise.

No question there is a God, and you are right - Jesus said leave the moral judgments to God. I agree with that. At the same time, there is not a medical need for abortion. The rate of incest, rape, or "health of the mother" abortions make up about five percent of all abortions. In these minuscule number of cases, I will listen to the arguments supporting abortion. Realistically, there aren't many women who want to carry a baby to term who was created from violence. (To stop women who aren't raped from abusing this, you set up laws preventing false claims, on top of the laws for filing a false police report. Same with the doctors.) The other ninety-five percent of women will have to live with not be consistent with birth control, plus not insisting her partner where a condom. They can carry the baby to term and hand him or her over to the state - the Baby Moses law - or put it up for adoption.

What is important is that women have legal access to abortion for whatever reason they choose. And the alternative options to abortion be there for them as well. I think that's the way it will always be in America. And the way it should be.

The pro-life percentages, over the last couple of decades, have been steadily rising. The number of abortions have been steadily dropping. If this stays the course, ten years from now, well over 70% of America will be pro life, and there will be pressure on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. (And don't tell me that they can't be swayed by outside forces. The recent decision of the Michigan affirmative action case proves otherwise.) You've noticed that "gun control" is a non-platform issue now for Democrats. Why? An overwhelming majority of America believes in our right to own guns. It is political suicide now for Democrats.

The hysterical thing...

I know. Isn't abortion funny?

...is that even if Roe-Wade is ever over- turned and the matter is returned to the individual states, many states will retain abortion on demand. Then women from states that restrict abortion rights, will simply have to spend an afternoon driving down the highway to a nearby state that allows the procedure. (I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you are not idiotic enough to think that abortion will ever be illegalized on a federal level. My only compassionate liberal advice for you would be--don't hold your breath on that one). And what is funnier still...

Wait...wait! Wiping my tears...

...is that if the matter does ever return to the states, there will be some conservative state legislatures that will restrict or illegalize abortion for the following reason---"Look guys, we know there are going to be thousands of women from our state wanting abortions for various personal reasons. They can just travel to a state that allows it. By banning it here, we can pretend that our state is more moral than others."

The day is coming when Roe v. Wade will be overturned, kicking it back to the states. The vast majority of the people in each state, except for California, Massachusetts and New York, will be pro-life, and will vote for pro-life legislatures and governors, who will make abortion illegal. Inside of fifteen years, we will not be having this conversation.

Lanny, give it up about the abortion issue. It's decided. It's over with. Even if Roe-Wade is over-turned, nothing changes. Find something else to b**** about. Regards, Wes.

As long as there are liberals, I will have plenty to b**** about. Thank you, and please stay in touch.
