Aug 11, 2003 "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we will pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty." This hawk-ish, resolute anti-Communism speech wasn't given by Senator Joe McCarthy, or Ronald Reagan, it was John F. Kennedy, in his Inaugural Address. "We shall not realize our objectives, however, unless we are willing to help free peoples to maintain their free institutions and their national integrity against aggressive movements that seek to impose upon them totalitarian regimes. This is no more than a frank recognition that totalitarian regimes imposed on free peoples, by direct or indirect aggression, undermine the foundations of international peace and hence the security of the United States." This wasn't a speech given by President Bush, it was Harry Truman, in his famed "Truman Doctrine," before a Joint Session of Congress on March 12, 1947. What happened to these Democrat paragons of principled foreign policy? As far back (in modern history) as Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Liberalcrats have had a foreign policy of "War? What is it Good For? Absolutely Nothing!" This is Franklin Roosevelt's statements concerning America's getting involved in World War II, even though Mussolini had declared war on France, and Hitler was racing across Europe: "Boston. October 30: "I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again: Your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars." Brooklyn. November 1: "I am fighting to keep our people out of foreign wars. And I will keep on fighting." Rochester, NY. November 2: "Your national government...is equally a government of peace - a government that intends to retain peace for the American people." Buffalo, NY. November 2. "Your President says this country is not going to war." Why do Liberalcrats hate war? As an ideology, liberalism is based on emotion. When putting forth an argument, Conservatives say "I think..." Liberalcrats say "I feel..." Liberalcrats don't "think." Their opinion is never formed by empirical evidence, hard facts and thorough research. Liberalism deals solely in abstract concepts: "War is bad," "Guns are bad," "Poverty is bad," "Capitalism is bad," "God is bad," "Unborn children are bad." No one "likes" War, but you need it in order to protect you, others, and maintain peace. Do you spray the hornet's nest when you first notice it, or do wait until the Muslim terrorists of the bug kingdom are gang-stinging you? Not only would Liberalcrats wait until they are getting the living daylights stung out of them, they would try to negotiate with the hornets. Diplomacy always works with hornets. They would also be afraid that swatting at the hornets, and running, would only make them angrier. All of this instead of launching a Shock and Awe campaign with two cans of Raid. But Liberalcrats reside in Liberal Land. It's a magical place where there are no wars. A place of fruit punch ponds and Chocolate Quick streams. Where unicorns gallop across lollipop plains, and fairies frolic in magical forests of leprechauns and rainbows. As the Communist News Network - CNN - was on their "March Against War," and the anti-America media was banging their hippie-liberal, anti-war, pro-Saddam drum, a few Democrats actually put their country before the political party. More rare than seeing a leprechaun. Prominent Democrat senators Evan Bayh, Joseph Lieberman, and Joe Biden, along with a minute handful of others, wholly supported President Bush pre-war, then during the war, and, now, post war. More characteristic of the Liberalcrats is represented by Waffle Kings, Senators John Kerry and Tom Daschle. If you haven't heard - Kerry is a Vietnam vet. It's also his last name. "I'm John Kerry I Was A Vietnam Vet" is how he's introducing himself now. He also reminds you that he speaks fluent French, and has travelled extensively abroad, to many countires, before getting to "so, what's your name?" He and Senate Minority Leader, Tom Daschle, fought the liberation of Iraq, and the regime change of Saddam Hussein, tooth and nail. Tom Daschle "Iraq's actions pose a serious and continued threat to international peace and security. It is a threat we must address. Saddam is a proven aggressor who has time and again turned his wrath on his neighbors and on his own people. Iraq is not the only nation in the world to possess weapons of mass destruction, but it is the only nation with a leader who has used them against his own people. . . . The United States continues to exhaust all diplomatic efforts to reverse the Iraqi threat. But absent immediate Iraqi compliance with Resolution 687, the security threat doesn't simply persist - it worsens. Saddam Hussein must understand that the United States has the resolve to reverse that threat by force, if force is required. And, I must say, it has the will" [Congressional Record, 2/12/98.] John Kerry "Mr. President, we have every reason to believe that Saddam Hussein will continue to do everything in his power to further develop weapons of mass destruction and the ability to deliver those weapons, and that he will use those weapons without concern or pangs of conscience if ever and whenever his own calculations persuade him it is in his interests to do so. . . . I have spoken before this chamber on several occasions to state my belief that the United States must take every feasible step to lead the world to remove this unacceptable threat. He must be deprived of the ability to injure his own citizens without regard to internationally- recognized standards of behavior and law. He must be deprived of his ability to invade neighboring nations. He must be deprived of his ability to visit destruction on other nations in the Middle East region or beyond. If he does not live up fully to the new commitments that U.N. Secretary- General Annan recently obtained in order to end the weapons inspection standoff - and I will say clearly that I cannot conceive that he will not violate those commitments at some point - we must act decisively to end the threats that Saddam Hussein poses." [Congressional Record, 3/13/98.] They don't make them like the used to. The Democrats find themselves standing at the crossroads. Will it be the anti-military, anti- tax cut, anti-capitalism, anti-family, anti-God, anti-life, anti-personal responsibility, pro-gay agenda, pro-U.N., pro-fringe interest groups, pro- communism, pro-socialism, pro-affirmative action faction? Or will it be a party that the other ninety-nine percent of America can vote for? ------------ Visit LannyGrant.com or email Lanny Grant: lannygrant@aol.com Comment on this column in the forum.
