Major Budget Cuts effecting California Teachers, Schools, and Students
Mar 15, 2003

As it has been the talk for weeks at Rally’s and Board of Education meetings, California has been subject to Major Budget Cuts effecting Teachers, Schools as well as students everywhere.

Everywhere you go, weather you are in line at your local supermarket waiting for check out or just browsing the campus of your school between classes, you find just about everyone worried while talking about the major budget cut in the state, as well as in the city and how many more people will be losing their jobs.

The budget cuts are effecting everyone, especially in the Silicon Valley of California. We just happen to be in the center, of where everything happens. The economy has hit rock bottom and people are pinching their pockets left and right to make it till tomorrow. No one really worries much anymore on what meal to put on the table to provide for their family, instead people worry about how they will be able to do the task of putting the meal on the table now, instead of worrying about the meal itself.

The main thing that’s being effected with the budget cuts isn’t really work and businesses, but the larger part happens to be in the area of Education, not just at Elementary, middle schools, as well as High schools but also at the College level.

For example, at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, a number of teachers that have been teaching there for quite some time, have now received their pink slips. It would be sad to see some of them go, because some of them have actually done their job quit well, in doing their part of teaching and contributed to people’s education as well as my own.

It is only a small number of them, who have made learning something fun instead of the grueling task I normally find it to be. Reason why I say this is because as a student, I see some of the teachers and what some of them do in their daily jobs. Some of them actually see their students and who it is the students want to be, and instead of making the road for the students harder to achieve their goals like many do, some of them reach out and give their students their full shot to success. It’s a nice thought, isn’t it? I am sure people love having helpful teachers like that, as I enjoyed being taught by some of them, but many of them will probably be gone soon.

West Valley College really suffered a big blow with the Budget Cuts, right along with other community colleges in the area. But cutting as many as Fifteen hundred classes out of next semester’s schedule of classes as the talk currently seems to be, is really too many classes to count and reaching for very drastic measures. Or isn’t it?

Students will probably have to be driving to several different schools perhaps in order to be getting the classes they need in order to continue or even to finish their education. Another thing that this Budget cut is proposing is the price of education. Right about now, people are paying $11 per unit at West Valley College, and other institutions, around the city, but with this whole budget cut, the price of education and tuition will be going up, and either doubling the old tuition price or just going to the dogs entirely.

Now what I am thinking as a College student, with both parents currently laid-off is this:

Many people who have already been laid off a year or two, have turned to going back to school to keep themselves busy so they aren’t just home, bored out of their mind and glued to the TV for most of the day. Some take this chance to go back to school to change their field of work, so they can look at another possibility of still bringing home some money to provide for their families and being able to pay for their bills at the same time.

But with the talk of raising tuition prices and so many people being laid off already with more lay off’s to come, who is going to want to pay double to go back to school? Who out there will be able to afford paying double to go back to school next to digging for money to support and keep a roof over the head of their family. It is definitely going to be extremely harder then it is now.

No one will be wanting to pay double for their school tuition needless to say pay more then what college books cost now. Teachers, Schools and Students everywhere are affected by this dumb budget cut. The economy just keeps on suffering and so do we.
