Extremism: An Invitation to Debate
Aug 23, 2003

Scott Jones has borne the slings and arrows of some of the columnists of U-K recently, me included. I bear no malice towards Mr. Jones personally; I simply disagree vehemently with much of what he writes. Recently he wrote the column entitled “Assumptions” in which he stated that “I have never been comfortable with extremists of any kind. It has often been my experience that such people tend to be closed minded and subject to a self-reflexive justification of their own ideas that neither invites or encourages any type of meaningful discussion.”

My take on previous columns by Scott Jones is that he is an extremist. I see by previous columns that he considers himself a liberal. Now, he may not be an EXTREME liberal such as a Hilary Clinton. However, I consider the liberal point of view to be extreme. Furthermore, that this site is a forum for discussion is reflected in the recent columns posted by Jones and Mr. Mariani and myself, among others.

But let’s go to the next step. I hereby invite any and all columnists to join me in considering some of the major issues of the day and posting our views. I will begin such a discussion by offering one issue, a very divisive issue: abortion.

Liberals like to paint Pro-Lifers as extremists. Senator John Kerry, referring to the Democrats filibuster to keep Miguel Estrada from being appointed by President Bush to the DC Circuit Court, said this: "The test is basic: Any person who thinks it's his or her job to push an extreme political agenda rather than to interpret the law should not be a Supreme Court justice." This is a statement following this one, made by Kerry and quoted in the Washington Times: "I am prepared to filibuster, if necessary, any Supreme Court nominee who would turn back the clock on a woman's right to choose or the constitutional right to privacy, on civil rights and individual liberties and on the laws protecting workers and the environment.”

But is a Pro-Life viewpoint extremist? The majority of the population believes that life begins at conception (58%, Newsweek Poll, June 2003) and about half want to see abortion banned. Previously I had mentioned that the country is split down the middle on the abortion issue, with around 44% in favor and 44% opposed and some undecided. (Gallup Poll, July 2003). On the other hand, 56% of the nation would want people who cause an unborn baby to be killed be charged with murder. The polls over the last few years have indicated that the American public is beginning to come over to the Pro-Life camp. People identifying themselves as Pro-Life are growing in numbers. It seems that the populace is becoming more and more uncomfortable with abortion.

As to interpreting the law rather than push a political agenda, the laws that were passed in this country prior to Roe V Wade were laws that made abortion illegal. It was a liberal court that pushed a political agenda in making abortion legal. There was not a law passed by Congress and signed by the President. It was judicial activism in action. Senator Kerry can lump abortion in with protecting the Snail Darter if he wishes, but anyone who knows the truth can see that he believes exactly the opposite of what he says. He DOES favor judges that push a political agenda and that agenda is the liberal point of view that the Supreme Court has been pushing for decades now.

Thorough surveys done concerning women obtaining abortions over the years indicate that only 1% seek abortions after being raped. The other 99% are for personal/social reasons that usually boil down to birth control after the fact. The liberal pro-abortion groups like NOW love to call the issue a matter of CHOICE. Yet these women could have chosen to use birth control and did not. They know that sex can produce babies, but they are so uncaring and callous as to simply kill off another human being for their own convenience sake. It is not extreme of me to say that this is wrong! It was illegal in this country until recently and it is immoral to this day.

Some liberals want to explain that unwed mothers tend to be locked into a cycle of poverty and so then do their children. They will say that an unwanted baby is going to make more trouble than he is worth. But is that baby truly unwanted? Fact: Over 20,000 babies adopted in the USA in 2001 were from foreign countries and more than one in every three adopted babies in this country now are from other shores. Couples must pay for a home study, pay an adoption agency (often 5-25 K for this service) and other fees plus wait for several months, if not years, to accomplish the adoption of a child. If those considering abortion would give their babies up for adoption, adopting couples would be able to adopt a child faster and at less cost as more babies became available. How much better for a woman to know that she gave a child a chance at life in a loving family rather than having been drawn and quartered unceremoniously in a surgical procedure?

But liberals do not like to mention that abortion is a major industry. My column of July 1st, “Who is the Man in the Windshield?” discussed that aspect. Abortion has been estimated to be a 90 Billion dollar industry and you can be sure that the same liberal politicians who rally to the cause of “Woman’s Choice” enjoy those campaign contributions from those who profit from baby killing.

No one can doubt that if a baby is killed while within the mother’s womb, it will not be born. I consider it to be murder. More and more of our populace agree. The idea that abortion should be illegal is hardly an extremist point of view. I challenge any liberal of any stripe to prove otherwise. I don’t think you can do it...But let’s see. Then we will go on to another issue.
