Dear Mr. Jones: You can have Susan, I’ll take Donna!
Aug 16, 2003

Recently one of our esteemed Useless-Knowledge colleagues dissed Donna Reed, specifically the “Donna Reed Show in his article”, “Freedom For All”. Quoting Mr. Scott Jones, “…what the real festering danger is here in America, a willing decent (sp!) Into a soulless, heartless landscape where the only moral foundation is based upon the prudent acquisition of and perpetuation of wealth and security. There is no place for free (contrarian) thought, no value placed upon romantic or emotional expression or nuance and an obsessive need for the bland, black and white ordered reality that was best epitomized by 1950’s era Donna Reed shows.”

I grew up watching shows like “The Donna Reed Show” and “Father Knows Best.” They were shows about the standard American family of the time. The parents had wisdom, the children learned lessons, sometimes the hard way, and everyone loved and respected their fellow family members. Apparently Mr. Jones, representing the liberal point of view, detests that representation of family life. I find that to be quite sad.

The 50’s were not so bland, Mr. Jones. There was a threat of nuclear destruction in the air, so that in the late 50’s and early 60’s bomb shelters were being built in innumerable backyards. “The Twilight Zone” had nuclear holocaust as a favorite theme. Much of this was due to the liberal, traitorous Democrats of the 40’s and 50’s that welcomed communists into the government and watched as the USSR became a mighty nuclear power and China became a totalitarian communist state. There was fierce debate on Capitol Hill regarding communists in government. The Korean War took place during this time. Our first involvement in Vietnam began in the 1950’s.

Rock and Roll became popular in the 50’s. Mantle supplanted DiMaggio. Lenny Bruce became popular in the 50’s. Ayn Rand came into vogue in the 50’s. Like every other generation, there were those who sought to push the social envelope and make society a bit more anarchic. Also like every other generation, there were those who sought after the best things in life. I don’t mean money; I mean love and truth and integrity, those kinds of things.

Mr. Jones, you probably prefer the Susan Sarandon’s, the radical NOW type of Hollywood liberal celebrity who apparently seek the overthrow of conventional mores and seemingly root against the USA at every turn. Somehow you see this kind of philosophy as more interesting and valid than I. Perhaps you think marriage precludes romance, but I can tell you it does not! You think raising a family is bland? I feel sorry for you! You think that being “contrarian” makes you interesting? I guess that means that 2-year-olds are the most fascinating group of people on the planet!

I have more to go, but I have raised 3 great kids so far. They all did well in school, went to church, participated in extra-curricular activities and had great reputations amongst their teachers and peers. One went to school, got married, and made me a grandpa. One is off to college, another into the military. I have three more left at home. I have a loving wife and I work for a living, doing my best to take care of my family. We know how to have fun, we sometimes get involved in pretty heavy discussions, and we have good friends.

The lifestyle portrayed on shows like “Donna Reed” did not include gay marriage or teen sex or crack addiction. There were no wife- beatings. Kids did not curse their parents or try to seduce their teachers. Guess what, Mr. Jones? My family life is like that. I expect all of my children to be useful and positive members of society. They do know the difference between right and wrong.

Mr. Jones, your “messy liberal education” was basically indoctrination that you swallowed hook, line and sinker. Running around naked on stage is not progress, nor is teaching kids that Castro is a hero or going around proclaiming that there are no absolutes. Your kind has worked hard to take God out of classrooms. You have pushed abortion on demand. You push for alternative lifestyles to be accepted. You would love to see euthanasia adopted drugs to be legalized, and a socialist government in place. Funny thing, when governments like you want to see in power actually get into power, people like you get dragged off to prisons. They don’t like contrarians in Red China, Mr. Jones. They often kill them there. Let’s not even consider North Korea.

Ordinary Americans want a good life for themselves and their families. They want freedom and are willing to fight and die for it. We are not guaranteed happiness and the world does not owe us a living. But this country guarantees us a chance to make a good life for ourselves. Again, I see you liberals as people who want to take the country apart and remake it. Most of the time, your motivations seem pretty selfish.

So I am going to say it. I think that there is a small, vocal minority of liberals out there that are as arrogant, ungodly, selfish, foolish, radical and untrustworthy as to be dangerous to our way of life. I come from a family of four generations of soldiers who have not feared to serve our country at a risk. My grandfather, father, myself and my son have all worn the uniform to stand for the right for you, Mr. Jones, to disregard much of what we, and our country, has stood for all these many years. This is one nation founded on Godly principles, which is why it is yet the greatest nation on this earth. I don’t fear empty-headed liberal rantings nor am I in any way a racist. You, Mr. Jones, are the one who is fearful.

Mr. Jones, you fear the internet and Fox News and Matt Drudge and Rush Limbaugh as the liberal news media has lost it’s stranglehold on information. You see that the country has a chance to consider various sides of issues. You see that the majority of Americans do not believe as you do. This country is still far more in tune with Donna Reed than Susan Sarandon.
