Aug 10, 2003 Perhaps it is simply my perspective that has changed over the years. I have trouble sometimes understanding how a liberal remains a liberal after he or she lives a few years in the real world. It seems to me as if liberal doctrine works best in theoretical mode, not being applied to actual people or situations. A student might easily buy into part of the liberal line, but years of experience and wisdom should change his or her mind. I have therefore formulated some questions that I would ask a typical liberal adherent in order to gain better understanding of that mindset. Representative Government. I see that lately a contingent of Texas Democrats, senators this time, have run away from their legislative responsibilities and hidden themselves away in New Mexico. A couple of months ago a group of Democratic Representatives from the same state fled to Oklahoma. In both cases, the Dems were fleeing the statehouse to avoid a quorum in the legislature so that there could not be a vote on a redistricting plan unfavorable to their party. The Republicans didn’t run away 11-12 years before when the Dems had their chance to redistrict. But it seems that the donkey party doesn’t care about the will of the people who voted the Republicans into power. Can you explain the Democratic plan to have a recall petition ready to file the very minute anyone other than Gray Davis becomes governor of California without giving the new boss a chance to fix some of the problems out there? I want to know………Do Democrats care about ANYTHING other than being in charge? Clintons. This is as baffling as it gets to me. The long list of scandals during the Clinton administration would take pages to reprise. But with all of the bad appointment decisions (Janet Reno? Jocelyn Elders??), the undercutting of the security agencies in general, the transmitting of military secrets to China, the appeasement of North Korea, the involvement in financial shenanigans, the Vincent Foster murder-or-suicide and the transformation of the White House into Beverly Hillbillies East, how can anyone want to be associated with these two? Then there is the impeachment in which President Clinton not only perjured himself, but sought to alter the testimony of witnesses, suborning perjury. I hear Democrats say that it was “only about sex.” Okay, if your next-door neighbor rapes your daughter, are you going to snort and exclaim that it is “only about sex” then? It turned out that Bill Clinton has a long history of trying to use his position and power to coerce women to have sex with him, sometimes forcibly. The legacy of the Clinton Presidency is one of subterfuge, patronage, immorality and greed. How can Democrats want to have anything to do with either one of them? I shake my head in disbelief! Intelligence. I challenge any and all to read “Slander” by Ann Coulter. The Democrats and the liberal news media’s portrayal of Republicans as “dumb” while Democrats are “brilliant’ has been remarkably successful. I suspect that much of this bias comes from the elitist branch of the party who tend to have gone to the “right” university (due to Daddy’s influence or big dollars) and now think they know what is best for the rest of us. Dems like Al Gore attend Harvard and Vanderbilt and are presented to the voters as near-geniuses. Our current President went to Andover, Yale and the Harvard Business School and performed very well academically. President Bush, however, is often accused of being a bit stupid by his political opponents. Democrats, do you see yourselves as smarter than everyone else and therefore you have to ignore what the people want and give us what’s good for us? Do you see yourself as a superior being because you are a liberal? Education. How many candidates claim they want to improve the schools? But Democrats turn away from the obvious solution because the have the contributions of the teacher’s unions in their back pockets. If vouchers were issued to parents to send their kids to the schools of their choice, then schools would have to compete with each other for students. In such a situation, it is not the rich who win, because they send their kids to private schools anyway. It is the common man, particularly in the inner cities, who would benefit. Schools could no longer afford to keep incompetent teachers and bad programs in place if they wanted to survive. Parents could choose from secular, public and private schools, some of which might require a payment above the voucher and some that would not. Can you not see how this would make for better schools and a better educated populace? Keeping Score. One of the younger columnists on the Useless-Knowledge site often uses a phrase like “Democrats win.” I almost think that he, and many others, views the political process as some kind of game and that we have teams to root for rather than parties that hopefully represent our ideals. Do you vote Democratic simply because that candidate belongs to your party? Or do you actually take a look at the candidate to see if he is worthy of your vote? I am now a Republican, but I occasionally vote for a Democrat who I think will be a superior choice over a Republican candidate. I admit now, with regret, that I did vote for Jimmy Carter in 1976. I approved of his Christian background and his command experience with the U S Navy. I thought he was a good guy (and perhaps he is). However, he couldn’t make a decision or face down an enemy up to and including a rabbit (!) and proved to be a failure in office. Still, I would be willing to vote for a Democrat if he is simply a better choice than the opponent. Can you say that? Choice. Here’s a good one. Your liberal wordsmiths have now translated baby-killing into abortion into “choice.” Americans are evenly split as to whether there should be any legalized abortion at all. However, even the majority of pro-abortionists believe that life begins at conception and that abortion is actually the taking of a human life. Liberal judges bypassed the congress and the president and made abortion legal. Therefore, many people support it, even if it is wrong, because it is convenient and it is ACCEPTED! Where is the moral leadership in the Democratic Party? How can you continue to support a procedure that has been medically shown to be a form of legalized murder? Homosexual Marriage. Another liberal concept- twist. Marriage is the union of a man and a woman. The idea of people of the same sex getting married should have remained ludicrous. Two men or women want to live together? Here in the USA you have the freedom to do it. But marriage is an institution that has been given some social and financial privileges because it is the means by which society raises it’s young. Young people are the future, and they are best taught and nurtured in the context of marriage. Countless studies have shown this to be true. Democrats, your leaders are pussy- footing around the issue but your liberal wing is pushing this “gay marriage” idea. Do you really want to start tearing down yet another pillar of our society? Immigration. It seems that the liberal plan for illegal immigrants is to give them ID cards and pass out benefits. Did 9/11 teach you nothing? You may think it is great to have illegal immigrants to be nannies to your children or pick your lettuce. But it only hurts society. There have long been rules in place for immigrating to the USA that multiple millions of people have followed. My ancestors came over from England and Scotland and Ireland and Germany, applied for and received citizenship. They became part of our culture, bringing some of theirs along for the ride, and began raising families. Illegal immigrants may be dangerous terrorists or criminals. If not, they will often join the underground economy, accepting meager wages that do not get taxed under the table. This truly hurts the economy, because every job that an illegal holds is one that a full-fledged citizen does not get. Would farmers have to pay legals more to pick grapes? Yes and then grapes would cost a bit more. But more citizens would have employment and therefore have more to spend, thus revitalizing the economy and enriching the nation as a whole. Maybe teens would pick California lettuce, and then maybe twenty-somethings would staff the Jack-In-The-Box. Maybe JITB would have to offer another dollar an hour. Maybe junior could buy his own cds and his parents would have more money to spend on a new lawnmower. Enforcing our immigration laws benefits the country economically and makes us more secure. Why can’t Democrats see this? Miscellaneous. How come you were all for Bill Clinton sending troops to Bosnia and against GW sending them to Iraq? Why do you rail against the military and the leadership of this country in time of crisis, when the troops overseas need your support the most? Why can’t you see that the point of welfare should be to get people working and making a paycheck? Why don’t you try to make government smaller and the price tag less rather than the reverse? Most Americans love this country and see it as great. We see America like an automobile that runs well, but needs an occasional tune-up. You Democrats, I think you secretly hate what America is and want to rebuild it, make it something else. Do you deny it? I want to know and understand, because frankly much of what you say and believe seems illogical, immoral, or both. I await your response! ------------ About the author: Kimbal Ross Binder is a husband of one wife and parent of six child units of various sizes.
