July 28, 2003 Those familiar with literature, and/or the Bible, are aware of the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt to the Promised Land. It is a tale of victory and defeat and eventual success. A dictionary reference will include the Jew’s journey, but also have a meaning like: “a journey by a large group to escape from a hostile environment” or “a going or marching out.” Exodus means “to hit the road, Jack!” It is a time when the citizens of other countries often risk their lives in an attempt to reach our shores. The Exodus from Cuba is often attempted in pathetically inadequate boats that sometimes sink before reaching Florida. Mexican citizens will pay large amounts of money to be crammed into a semi-trailer and risk illness and even death to get into the States. Eastern Europeans, Africans, people from every continent come here to have a chance at a better life. Said one young Asian émigré, “I have come because in America, one has a chance to make a difference.” Oddly, there is a movement beginning in this country that goes in the opposite direction. People are moving AWAY from the good old USA! Johnny Depp said in a USA Weekend article (July 6th) “There is still the possibility to live a simple life. You can go to the market, walk about, buy fruits and vegetables -- the things they did 100 and 200 years ago. We have moments when we're sitting in our house and our kids are playing, and we look at one another and think, 'Thank God we escaped.'" He was referring to his recent move to France, where he lives with actress Vanessa Paradis and has begun a family, albeit without the burden of marriage. Political Science 101 teaches the concept of nations or sometimes, tribes. One definition of a nation is “A people who share common customs, origins, history, and frequently language; a nationality” A nation is not necessarily a country, although a country that is also a nation is stronger than a country composed of several nations. A nation is a group of people with common interests and purposes and ideals. Iraq is a country in which Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds could all be considered separate nations. One of the USA’s strengths has been our assimilation of people from hundreds of different nations into our own. While there has been some divisiveness in our country over the years, it could not be said that Blacks or Chinese or Slavic people have formed a nation within a nation to the detriment of the country as a whole. The United States has been a great success in part because we absorb various nationalities rather than force them to remain separate from the whole. Now we see the radical Left as emerging as a classic nation within a nation, a group of people that may share the language and heritage of the rest of us, but whose customs are at variance with the norm. College Campuses are havens for the Left, a forum for the deranged to try to infect our youth. The Left has begun to lose it’s stranglehold on the Democratic Party but still remains in the majority. Celebrities, those folks who think it takes 11 people to accompany them to their next destination and are unfamiliar with the concept of “work” are often their biggest cheerleaders. The Left has been unceasingly dedicated to moving the entire country in the direction of Socialistic, Humanistic doctrines and are now dismayed that the pendulum has begun to swing back to the Right. There were plenty of celebrities who threatened to move out of the country when the Iraq issue came to a head last fall. Harvard Professor and author Anis Shivani wrote a diatribe against America, “Is it time to move to Canada?” , in which he sniffed: “Dissenters have failed to come to terms with the enormity of the totalitarian revolution underway in the U.S. Radicals, leftists, progressives, liberals have all chosen, for the most part, different forms of denial and escapism. But now the time is at hand to decide once and for all how our individual lives must change in response to the beast that has arisen in this country……..We can only escape into our private selves for so long; this regime is so brutal that sooner or later there will be a knock on everyone's door (literally and figuratively). Not one out of the 300 million people in this country will be left alone. Nobody will escape this vise, this continent-wide dragnet. If you've ever thought or spoken or written or done anything that the Dear, Great Leader of ours might not find acceptable, be very afraid. Make plans now, to protect yourself. All the love and good feelings in the world won't be any good if you're chosen to be the target of the Dear, Great Leader's affection.” Comparing President and his administration to a totalitarian government is a ludicrous and pathetic refuge for those who do not have a better argument. CNN had a different take on the idea. An article entitled “Dismayed Americans contemplate Canada” stated “For decades, even while nurturing close ties with the United States, Canadians have often chosen a different path -- establishing universal health care, maintaining ties with Cuba, imposing tough gun control laws. Two current Canadian initiatives, to decriminalize marijuana and legalize same-sex marriage, have pleased many liberals in the United States and irked conservatives.” The lure of same-sex marriages and pot parties apparently holds a great appeal for some! Cannabis News was among a number of other sources to run the article, of course. The statistics tell us that, since 1977, more Canadians have chosen to come to the USA than the other way around. The latest official figures, from 2001, have about 30,000 Canadians coming south and less than 6,000 United States citizens going north. Aside from the obvious factor of longer winters, Canada has a reputation for having health care that just does not work. The last time US citizens fled to Canada in great numbers was during the Vietnam era, when many young men and often their girlfriends or wives moved north to evade the draft. There is no longer a threat of a draft in this country. It is apparent, though, that in this country are a number of liberal elitists and celebrities who have contemplated a future in this country without high taxes, massive social programs, a weakened military, gay marriages, abortions on demand, and Bill Maher on national television and shudder. Aside from moments of mania cheering for Howard Dean or time spent contemplating a Hilary presidency, life in the USA appears to be headed for grim times. Conservative values that reflect a Judeo- Christian ethic, peace through strength and individual opportunity and responsibility have become more appealing to the average American than the Social Democratic policies and Humanistic ethics of the Left. The advent of the internet and Fox News has sidestepped the liberal domination of the news media. Liberals leaving the USA? Do they think that the rest of us will mourn? If Alec Baldwin moves to Toronto how will that affect my utility bill? Will Prince moving to Canada make the days shorter? Go ahead, make my day! I hope every God-hating, Marx-worshipping college professor follows them! Let all the ultra- liberal politicians move right along with them! Canada ought to seem like paradise to the Carl Levins and Howard Deans, et al. Three cheers for Universal Health Care! They will simply be joining the crowd that fits their style. Perhaps when all the radical and elitist types leave us, then the rest of us can work together more effectively. Imagine a Democratic Party in which moderates prevail rather than “progressive” types that are more concerned with changing our form of government than promoting the common good. Imagine elections in which both candidates might be pretty good choices! Okay, maybe I’m hallucinating. Probably 99% of the left wingers in this country will stay here and continue to try to raze the foundations upon which the USA was founded. It is what they do, they wouldn’t be happy living where the government might suit them. Those dedicated to tearing down and changing things would likely be bored. The tax structures in Canada just might not be their cup of tea. Not to mention how hard it is to get a tummy tuck! No, I suppose any exodus of the rich, amoral and clueless to northern climes is highly unlikely. The liberal politicians, of course, could not be politicians in Canada and therefore might have to actually get a job, thus spoiling the fun. I suppose that such an exodus would rob Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh of most of their material and that would be a shame. On the other hand, if you are a liberal and are considering such a move, let me clue you in: Hockey is a much better sport in person! ------------ About the author Kimbal Ross Binder: Erstwhile gym-rat, former independent driven by disgust for the Democratic Party into the arms of the Republicans, current parent and expert at puns, jokes that make people groan and eating Debbie's cooking.
