What Hasn't Been Explained?
Apr 27, 2004

Today I was having a conversation with a couple of young men in their early twenties. They were asking me if I thought there would actually be a draft. I said it was possible but I didn’t think it would happen. It’s my belief the Army can sustain its numbers without a draft. There seem to be enough dedicated young men and women volunteering to fill the need. A volunteer army is preferred over a conscripted army.

One of the young men asked me why it was always America who went to war in other lands? He wanted to know why other countries didn’t take care of the problems in their own areas? He said he thought it was George Bush’s intention to control all the oil in the world. The other young man was more knowledgeable and less critical. Both had a sincere desire to seek answers to the burning question “Why America”?

I’m not sure I have the answers but let me give my version, “Why America”?

Nearly every one in America has a grandparent, aunt or uncle, cousin, someone in a foreign land around the world, they can relate to. When someone in one of those foreign lands is attached one of our neighbors feels the pain. A member of that person’s family is in danger. It’s the nature of man to protect his own.

America has been extremely lucky or extremely determined. For nearly two hundred twenty-five years by its reputation of “Don’t Tread On Me” we have survived. Only four times in Americas history have there been foreign combatants attach on our soil. Because America has never acquiesced to the intimidations of invaders we’ve remained free of occupation.

The bad-guy’s have arrived at the realization America can’t be defeated militarily. They haven’t gone away and they haven’t given up. They’ve simply changed their identities and their tactics. They cover their faces and attach innocent civilians. They coerce children to blow themselves up in order to kill civilians. They use seventh century tactics against modern military technology. The enemy we face today isn’t afraid to die, that’s their advantage.

Against this style of warfare it is much safer for America to fight these battles on their turf rather than in the streets of New York or Boston.

This is why America has always gone to the fight as apposed to having the fight come to America. Pre-emption is no vice in the face of adversity. It’s only prudent to play by the rules when both sides honor the rules.

When people hear America has no business in conducting policy around the world. I say “If Not America, Then Who”. Certainly not the UN. Will France stand at the gate to repel the Barbarians? Do we, as Americans want the invaders to come to our soil? Are we to wait until they are among us with their suicide bombers, rockets and roadside bombs before we react?

America’s determination to remain free is the only defense it has against the invaders. Unless were willing to fight for that freedom it will be taken from us all to soon.

America is the emblem of freedom around the world. America is what the world would like to be but will not admit to. America is not an aggressor nation, we are a vigilant nation and rightly so.

This is why I feel America must be the world’s leader who fights to protect in order the world not to be devoured by the Barbarians.
