Coming Soon, Glad-Wrap.org
Mar 15, 2004

Checking my e-mail, there staring at me was an e-mail from GLAD-WRAP.ORG I was about to delete it when a little voice in the back of my head told me to stop. I wasn’t worried about opening it. I have all the bells and whistles protecting my computer from viruses, With a name like that it must be an on-line pharmacy, porn-spam or a sub-site of moveon.org. I admit I was curious, I though what a clever name

GLAD-WRAP it turns out is an anagram for “GAY-LITHUANIAN-AMERICAN-DEMOCRATIS-WITH-REASONABLE-APPROPRATE-P OSITIONS”. I had been invited to attend their weekly meeting. I arrived at Kate’s Korner Kafe, Kate pointed to a large booth in the rear it holds nine or so. After listening a few minutes it was obvious these men weren’t gay and probably not Lithuanian. I ask about the name? I was told they had considered DDD for DISGRUNTLED-DISENFRANCHISED- DEMOCRATS, but it didn’t seem to go any where. If you want to get a message out you have to be associated with something ethnic and a minority position or your wasting your time I was told. All the cool hyphenates, ( Italian-American, Tibetan-American, etc. etc.), were taken and there wasn’t much left to choose from.

GLAD-WRAP’s had it with “The most crooked lying group of ****** ******* they had ever heard”, (must have been talking about the Massachusetts Democrats). If the Democratic Party of FDR, HST and JFK were to survive it was time for GLAD-WARP to make their stand. I wasn’t sure what impact seven men could have on national politics. It occurred to me the American Revelation started in Boston’s Harbor with not many more men. They might have a chance. All great movements start with an idea and a few good men willing to make a stand. This may turn out to be something after all.

GLAD-WRAP was just getting started. They hadn’t elected any officers, they hadn’t filed the necessary papers with the Government. The only funds they collected were the tip for the waitress at Kate’s. You could say it was still more or less in the planning stages.

I wasn’t sure where I fit in. They explained they had called several Media sources and had been turned down none were interested in such a small group. They needed a Media source sympathetic who would endorse their movement.

I assured them Useless Knowledge would consider an endorsement in the event they became a serious party and I could get anyone else interested. I didn’t have the heart to tell them they were more organized than the Useless Knowledge Columnists. I really didn’t hold out much hope GLAD-WRAP would get beyond a second or third meeting. Offering an endorsement didn’t seem like such a big deal. I could pull a Gore and cancel the endorsement at any time.

I ask them how they discovered Useless Knowledge? I was told some of the men’s teenagers had discovered Useless Knowledge while surfing the net. They’re trying to spark an interest in their children to at least learn a little about the politics of their Government, they encourages their search for information. One told her dad about this cool web-site she found knowing he’s a political junkie she thought he may like it. Or I stop by Kate’s Kafé a lot maybe Kate mentioned me to one of them. What-ever.

The men of GLAD-WRAP are convinced Cable TV, Talk Radio and the Inter-net are the wave of the future for the dissemination of truthful political information. I agree, when Benjamin Franklin started Poor Richards Almanac it was considered a joke, later it became the Saturday Evening Post. The main stream Media has become very biased in their opinions. They’re not necessarily biased more to the Liberal side, well maybe a little. Their bias they consider themselves their only audience. They report to each other and the Elite Washington Crowed, to hell with readers.

I’ve talk with many DDD’s, if there actually were a GLAD-WRAP would join in a heartbeat. They don’t like President Bush. Many feel he lied to them like his Father before him. I think the President could have been more forth coming in his answers why certain things didn’t happen. However misrepresentation is in the Washington culture . It doesn’t change in one term in office. Presidents have more to do than respond to rhetorical questioning by the Media and the Pundits.

Most of the DDD’s I talk with and listen to don’t plan on voting for John Kerry either, they aren’t sure who they’ll vote for. Most can’t forgive John Kerry for his anti-war rhetoric. Viet Nam, the Gulf War and now the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. It’s very French to oppose wars and enable Dictators, to play lap-dog for the UN. It has always been an American tradition to fight the war and argue the politics later. I live in a community were everyone pays taxes. Kerry’s tax increases aren’t gaining him any converts. Kerry has very much misread the attitude of the voters to his detriment. They may not be for war and deficits but they’ll support those young men and women fighting that war for as long as it takes. Americans are neither cowards nor trash-talkers. We certainly aren’t wishy washy.

I have a fear, I may be taking myself and other Useless Knowledge Columnists to serious. I never intended for this to be anything other than a fun thing. The Liberals are beginning to get my dander up. If I become a zealot, I hope someone will slap me on the head, hard and bring me back to earth.
