I'm An Agnostic, I May Switch
Feb 21, 2004

I have never considered myself a Christian person, this is why I define my religious beliefs as Agnostic for the sake of something better. I believe in a greater power who set the world in motion. As I see it there had to be a plan, this inter-dependency of matter couldn’t have all been by accident. My beliefs stop short of worshiping a God other than My God, the one who did all the heavy lifting. I have no doubt God has sent messengers with instructions to set the world straight. That they were never successful is not the fault of God or his messenger. It simply means the world isn’t ready to listen.

With all the controversy over the “ Separation of Church and State” What with so many people apposed to religions I get the feeling there may be something to it after all. When you have that many people that worried about it there has to be something to religion. Not being willing to take risks I am taking a second look. My problem is where do I go and who do I talk to? There are so many variegations of Christianity it’s hard to know which would be the right one for me. Becoming Jewish or Muslim would be difficult for me, I love bacon and hate hats. Most of the Oriental religions require you do a lot of strange things with a lot of strange things. Then I thought I’m seventy-two soon to be seventy-three being an Agnostic hasn’t hurt me any. I’m in a lot better shape than most of my religious friends. I think I’ll out off any decision and give it some more thought.

I got in a discussion with an acquaintance the other day. She is one of those dedicated “ WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE ADVOCATES”. I have said many times I’m not clear on the subject of abortion, I have misgivings on both sides. I decided it was time to add a little controversy to the subject. I ask her if I had the right to smoke cigarettes until I developed lung cancer. Of course not she said it’s a health issue. Isn’t abortion a health issue for the aborted child I ask. The fetus isn’t a child yet she replied. Did God tell you that I ask? You are being totally ridiculous she said. Isn’t my right to choose the same as your right to choose I ask. It’s to complicated for you to understand she said. Ok explain it to me I ask? Something else came up and my acquaintance had to leave.

I have a lot of opportunity to encounter the ridicules, probably because I look for it wherever I am. A fellow was ranting how the Police had no right to make him wear a seatbelt. If he wanted to kill himself it was his right, I agree. I’ve been wearing seatbelts since the early 1960 when they first started putting them in cars. It’s a personal choice each individual should make. But what about children some would argue? Parents should be responsible for the welfare of their children. The Constitution doesn’t give the Government the right or the obligation to protect children above anyone else. A parent can be arrested and jailed for his child not being buckled up. A child can get an abortion without parental consent, please tell me how this is possible. Pornography and profanity can be broadcast on the national air-waves. A child can’t mention the word God in a public school. The Federal Courts have so ruled, please explain this to me? An American who is accused of trying to detonate a bomb to kill his fellow citizens has the right to an attorney and a hearing in a public trial. I on the other hand don’t pay my taxes and the Government can attach my bank account without even a hearing.

The voters need to make some adjustments to the way the Government does business. This is only possible by retiring some of the old Congressman and electing a whole new slate. Only Congress has the power to effect change. As long as those who have been in power are allowed to remain in power we will have these aforementioned unjust situations to deal with. There isn’t really much difference between the powers the Congress exorcises and those of any Middle-Eastern State, only the way it’s being reported. If you think this is a harsh statement check it out. You’ll see very little of what the Congress does is in keeping with the needs and wants of the public. Term Limits will only come about when the voters decide enough is enough.

So how did I go from religion to politics? I guess politics is my religion. I leave the running of the world to God and since he prefers to remain non-partisan I’ll do what I can if the field of politics.

These are my opinions. You form yours.
