They Don't Get It
Feb 10, 2004

Have you ever meet one of those people who gives you the impression they were raised by Wolves and don’t understand a thing you say? You get that blank stare, hello is any one home in there? A friend and I meet for coffee a couple of times a week. There’s this fellow who always seems to be there. He listens to my friend and my conversation and insists on joining in, you know the type. I know this fellow isn’t really a liberal, he’s more an “ I don’t understand the question Democrat”. He knows my friend and I are Conservative Republicans. He seems to think it’s his mission in life to educate us. There a lot of them out there, they think they know but aren’t sure what it is they know, don’t know or don’t want to know.

We ran into this fellow today, his first comment was “ If the election where held today George Bush would lose”.( He never refers to Bush as the President ) And how do we know this I ask? The poles he said. Are these the same poles that predicted Howard Dean would win Iowa and New Hampshire in a landslide I ask? He says the poles are giving John Kerry over 50% and George Bush only 45% chance of being elected, doesn’t that bother you he ask? Not really, their poling Democrats. If anyone should be worried it should be John Kerry. If 45% of Democrats want to vote for President Bush Kerry’s in trouble. There’s another pole out that says 75 % of Canadians and 90% of the Europeans wouldn’t vote for George Bush he told me. Good we don’t want the Canadians and the Euros voting anyway I told him. He gave me one of those blank looks. He couldn’t understand why I wasn’t concerned by all the opposition to President Bush. I understand his problem. If one watches the Network Media and CNN, in their eyes President Bush has already lost the election.

He ask if I watched Tim Russert interview Bush on Meet the Press? I said I had, in fact I liked it so much I watched it when it was re-run later in the evening. Russert really made Bush look foolish he said. I ask if he had watched it, he said he hadn’t but he heard about it from the Today Show. I told him I felt President Bush had not only held his own but had out preformed Russert on many of the issues. I said I thought the President had answered Russert’s questions very clearly. He hadn’t dodged any issues, he clearly and concisely explained every issue Russert brought up. I am sure it wasn’t to the satisfaction of the political pundits but I was convinced. Once again I got one of those blank stares.

Doesn’t it bother you they haven’t found any WMD’s he ask? No I said, I’m pleased they haven’t found any, I only hope they never find any. It’s my hope they’ve all been destroyed. We know he had them once and used them more than once. That was justification enough for me. If that doesn’t work for you count the thousands of graves they’ve uncovered in Iraq. The Iraqis hate us he said. How do you know this I ask? Their protesting America in the streets of Baghdad, haven’t you been watching? Yes I have been watching, I see a country who for the first time in their history has the same right, the same freedom to protest John Kerry, Jane Fonda and Bill Clinton exorcized during the Viet Nam War. Protest is the first step in creating a Democracy. Our forefathers started the American revelation with protests. Don’t you recall the story about the Boston Tea Party? Damn another of those blank stares.

Look at the deficit Bush is creating for our children. He’s wasting all the surplus Clinton created with his spending and his tax cuts, what about that. ( He thought he finely had me). First, there was never a surplus, the Government has no way of holding on to money and wouldn’t if they could. That was projected tax revenues that hadn’t yet been collected so there was never any real money involved it was all speculation. . Second, Presidents don’t spend money, Congress, (those are the men and women elected to the house and senate who authorize all expenditures) spent the money. Third, as a percentage of GNP ( Gross National Product ) the deficit had been much larger when Democrats were in power in Congress. Forth , tax cuts for the rich and business, have stimulated the economy. I ask the fellow how many jobs he had created this week? None I don’t create jobs. Then I ask him how many jobs were created by the Federal Government and how many jobs had been created by Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Ford Motor Company, McDonalds, etc.. etc. I pointed out in order for those companies to create jobs they must sell product. Customers need money to purchase product. Sending the money to Washington for Congress to spend won’t create many jobs and certainly won’t stimulate the economy. If Congress wants to wisely spend the countries money cut the PORK programs. Start being responsible with our recourses and end the wasteful programs of the past. We send enough money to Washington, the problem is the way it’s spent by the Congress not the President.

You guessed it, another blank stare. I am sure the next time we drop by the Coffee Shop and he’s there it will be a repeat of all the other conversations. Nothing said today will have penetrated his Democratically programmed brain.

These are my opinions. You form yours.
