Feb 7, 2004 My Super-bowl Sunday was about the same as it’s been for the past nearly forty years. I don’t get very excited about football, I think the only reason I watch the Super-bowl is to be able to talk to people the day after without sounding like a nerd. I really don’t care who wins, who loses or who plays. When it comes to using a T. V. remote I have developed the skills of a Concert Pianist. I am able to capture the important aspects of the game without viewing all the nonsense. I don’t want to sound boisterous but this is one of few skills I have been able to master. I watched the half-time segment for less than 30 seconds and decided it wasn’t something I would care to see. When all the controversy started over the performance between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake it took me some time to understand what all the flack was about. I don’t have children or grand children around my house. I was the only one who could have been offended and I did what I would expect all viewers to do, I used my remote to correct the situation. It hadn’t occurred to me there are people who wouldn’t consider changing channels regardless of the content of the programming. After all this is the Holy Grail of football to miss one scintilla of the game would be unthinkable for the devoted fan. I wasn’t as offended by Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake or MTV and the NFL as I was by those who watched then complained later. It’s called a REMOTE, if I can use one any child and certainly any adult can do so as well. The conduct of the entertainers and the sports participants involved has been well documented, why would this conduct come as a surprise to any viewer? I recall a time when entertainers could hold the interest of an audience with talent alone. The use of laser lights, pyrotechnics, profanity, nudity, holding ones crotch and any number of other repulsive antics weren’t necessary. When melody and rhythms were no longer an element of music and was replaced by electronic impulse alone we lost the entertainment factor, it became cult worship. Believe it or not there are still those who think Janet Jackson’s strip-tease was an accident. Many say they are looking for answers, I have the answer its Congress, change Congress and you change the culture. The majority of Congress is made up of Lawyers yet they can’t pass a law defining obscenity and pornography that will pass the Federal Courts standards. Trial Layers and Federal Judges are running the legal system of the country. Congress who by law should be in charge has been nurtured by the requirements of financing their next campaign.. In other words they spend all their time raising money for re-election and leave legislating to others. The country needs term limits to bring accountability to those we elect to represent us in Congress. The President most Governors and many state Congressman are subject to term limits. I see no compelling reason to keep Congressman beyond a maximum of twelve years. If a Congressman hasn’t fulfilled his agenda in twelve years he isn’t going to do it in twelve more years. Once a Congressman has served a few terms they are no longer accountable to their constituents, they accountable to their financial backers. These are not to be confused with Lobbyists, Lobbyists are a very important element in Government not to be confused with Special Interests. Special Interests aren’t the same thing as Lobbyists. They can be one and the same but not always. Congressional candidates disavow special interests yet this accounts for 90% of their financing. Special Interests understand two things, one candidates don’t really mean what they say and two nothing is going to change after the elections. In the resent campaign finance reform passed by Congress the only restrictions where put on we the public. Not only our ability to contribute but our right to speak out against the candidates. Special Interests ability to contribute was enhanced ten-fold. Now we must rely on the Media for all political information 60 days prior to any election. So much for free speech. I am a strong advocate for Term Limits I’m thinking about including Federal Judges (who are appointed for life) in my quest. America is an experiment in evolutionary Government, lets hope it’s headed up to the heights of humanity and not in to the sewers of depravity. These are my opinions.
