Bad Things Happen To Good People
Jan 30, 2004

I will tell you a true story of courage, faith, hope and an unwavering belief in the Almighty God who protects us all, like it or not.

A young couple I know have fallen pray to one of life’s unexplainable adversities. The loss of a child. This young couple grew up in an upper middle class community. Neither ever had any problems with the things many young people fall pray to, drugs, alcohol , encounters with the police, parents not understanding them. They where both at the top of their classes in both High school and University. They have in the ten years since graduation become pillars of their community. Brad is a CPA, Heather is a Research Scientist who has chosen to stay at home and raise their two young daughters, leaving her professional career on hold for perhaps the next 20 years or so. The Brady Bunch would have been proud having this young couple living next door.

Heather became pregnant, a few months into the pregnancy they discovered a serious problem. Heather was carrying twins, one was severely deformed and her chances of survival where in doubt. As the twins developed it was obvious only one had any chance of survival. Considering the expense, the inconvenience , the trauma abortion would be one solution. Not to Brad and Heather, the Grandparents, the Aunts and Uncles, their friends. Abortion was out of the question. These twins where family with all the rights and privileges of family, they where loved. Every effort would be made to do what ever was possible to insure the survival of the healthy twin. They where given names, Kylie and Emily. They where referred to as people not with pity, not as objects.

I would like to share Emily’s epitaph with you, written by her Father.

I in my strength give life to my sisters.

I’ll watch out for them always, I guarantee.

I’ll watch from above with family that came before me.

I’ll be the Angle for Sam. Ally and my buddy Kylie.

I’ll watch as they laugh. Cry. Play and Sing.

For I’ll always be with you, you’re Angle sister Emily.

This isn’t earth shaking in any respect. It’s a simple story of extra ordinary people. It points out there are young families who still hold some of the old traditional values dear. They aren’t blaming God, they have accepted this with an understanding things happen, not to any particular class of people but to all classes to people. The know the tragedy of losing one twin and the joy of saving the other. Few will ever know this story, few will remember. Fewer still will care, that will be left to family, friends and the sisters, Sam, Ally and Kylie.
