Jan 12, 2004 President Bush has taken another Democratic issue and turned it into political capital for Republicans. For years Congress has been vacillating on the illegal immigrant issue. They wanted it out there but didn’t want to have to confront it head on. It has always been a good subject for discussion that would excite voters. When the election is over it goes back in the box until the next election. President Bush comes up with a plausible solution presents it to the voters then hands it off to Congress for them to initiate the mechanics. Good thinking George, if it works you’re a hero, if it fails it’s not your fault. I like a man who can walk and chew gum at the same time. Amnesty or what ever it’s called is a political ploy on both sides. Everyone knows there is no way the Government is going to round up 8 to 10 million illegal workers and send them back to the more than 190 countries they came from. Illegal Immigrants don’t only come from Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. There are illegal immigrants from every country in the world, including the British Commonwealths. The World loves America when they can come live here but hates us when they can’t. The Democrats are blaming President Bush for the open borders. How about the previous eight years and the one hundred years before that. This country has had open borders since the first pilgrims landed. How do you think all the white people got here the Indians sure as hell didn’t invite them, they where all illegal immigrants. It wasn’t all that long ago the ancestors of the very people how oppose the guest worker program where guest workers. If there are 8 to 10 million illegal worker them there must be a substantial number of illegal employers. Why are we not hearing about them ? Could this perhaps have shades of brown and black in it ? Are we forgetting we have a sign on our front door inviting the oppressed to this country. That sign is lighted by a lady holding a lighted torch guiding the oppressed to find their way to a new and better life. The sign doesn’t say when we reach 3 hundred million the welcome light goes out and a no vacancy sign comes on. I remember very clearly that morning fifty years age when I stood on the deck of a ship looking at the Lady with the light telling me I was welcome to enter her house. Immigrants don’t come to America to collect welfare or for jobs alone they come in the hope of becoming American an citizen, for the same reason they have always come. Many Europeans, Near Eastern Asians and those from the Middle East come through Canada, Canada has very liberal requirements for immigration yet most will chance crossing another border to enter the United States leaving Canada behind. Chinese will spend weeks in the holds of freighters in inhuman conditions to enter the United States. Cubans risk death to cross the straights of Florida to come here. Mexicans risk death in the deserts to come to the United States. All have one hope in common to become an American. What would you risk to become an American? I ask this question with no disrespect intended, Americans have always been willing to risk it all when called on. Just consider the contributions made by immigrants legal and illegal then ask your self is it really that important, are we really that crowded we cant accommodate one or two more. To many in the world America is a life-boat, the only one around. I know of no other country in the world who has the problem of sealing the borders to keep people out. Most countries seal them to keep people in. I don’t want to leave the impression I am an immigrant, I’m not. I was born in the States I grew up in the Caribbean. I spent most of my life on both sides of many borders. I am sure I have more of an immigrant attitude than I should. Like most who come here from somewhere else, I am an avid Patriot. I have known America and I have known others give me America every time. These are my opinions. You form yours. ------------ About the Author: Ken Hughes is a retired businessman.
