Jan 4, 2004 I didn’t bother to follow the House or Senate bill limiting my right to free political speech. I think it was called Campaign finance reform. I thought it would pass the Supreme Courts free speech test, frankly I’m surprised it didn’t. I get the feeling Sandra Day O’Connor is taking Liberal pills again. The Supreme Court can’t define pornography but knows exactly what I should and shouldn’t hear politically. Didn’t I read some where in the constitution, congress shall make no law restricting the right of a free press, I’m sure I read that somewhere. There’s that thing in the constitution about separation of powers. Congress makes laws not the Courts. Are we to assume the constitution can be altered at the will of the Courts. I get really confused when I hear, see and read all the interpretations made by the Courts, Congress and the Media of our constitution. My constitution says before it can be changed they have to ask me if it ok. No ones been asking lately. Should you write your congressman? I get more replies from Santa than my congressman. In the name of fairness I must say I did get one reply from my Representative this year but only one. If you write your congressman ( House or Senate) once you’ll more than likely get a reply from an aid saying the person of intent will consider your request. (They always ask for a donation). If you write twice they think you’re some kind of a Nut, if you write three times they send your name over to the FBI to have you investigated for harassment.. I have tried to write several in the Senate and House both via e-mail and the U S Postal service. I would have more luck reaching them by using smoke signals or carrier pidgins. Congress doesn’t have time for their constituents. I mean after all what does the public know about running a country ? If I where a Democrat I would go into an elongated explanation of all those things wrong with congress. I’m a Republican so in true Republican fashion I’ll cut to the chase, we can fix what’s wrong with congress with term limits. The constitution doesn’t provide for an apprenticeships. Congressman should be effective from the day they take the oath . The members of the House of Representatives would run for office every four years and be limited to three four year terms allowing only twelve years in the House. They wouldn’t be prohibited from running for the Senate however. Campaigning costs would be greatly reduced and would give the Congressman more time to concentrate on his job than begging for money. This would totally eliminate the Good-Old-Boy longevity system. More good men and women would have an opportunity to serve their country. More new ideas would be forthcoming. Congressman would be less protective of their turf, knowing their turf was limited. Congress was never intended to provide lengthy career opportunities, it was meant to allow men and women to have the opportunity to participate in the workings of government. The same rules would apply to the Senate with the exception of two six year terms rather than three four year terms. It still adds up to twelve years and that’s it. Now I ask you, how hard is that to figure out? If congress wants to regulate campaign spending let them pass laws regulating the spending of and not the collecting of campaign funds. The McCain, Finegold law has yet to have the ink dry and already the Presidential aspirants have raised a record high in champagne funds. When congress passes a law for the benefit of the people you can bet it will be the people who benefit the least and pay the most. I had fully intended to leave this issue of term limits alone for a while but watching good old General Wesley Clark re-runs has gotten my political blood boiling once again. My reasons are convoluted, just take my word for it. That man should run as a Candidate for the PETA Party not the Democratic Party, I swear the mans a Vegetarian. In addition may I suggest on every envelope you mail write the words TERM LIMITS in 36 point type. These are my opinions.
