Nov 29, 2003 It was a line from the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. As Paul Newman and Robert Redford crossed the rocky slopes of Wyoming’s rugged mountains, looked back periodically to see the Indian tracker Lord Baltimore right behind them, hot on their trail. Butch says to Sundance, “ WHO IS THAT GUY”? I see Democrats looking at President George W. Bush and asking “WHO IS THAT GUY”? Every time the Democrats think they have an issue the President smiles and either takes it away or deflates it. The President reminds me of those old B-Western Movies with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. He never angers, he never swears, he always smiles and shoots the gun out of the hand of the bad guy’s never killing them just humiliating them. And yes, he gets the Girl, Laura. The Democrats and Media Elites have tried to make an issue out of the President landing on the Aircraft Carrier. There are two hundred and eighty (plus or minus) million soles claiming American citizenship. There where five thousand Sailors on that ship. How many have landed in a Jet @ 100 mph plus on an Aircraft Carrier? The public will have none of it. They see a courageous leader doing things few others would dare to do. It is all done in the name of compassion and leadership, very little for politics, as Liberals would try to make us think. I am totally surprised they think President Bush is such a dummy. If he’s as dumb as they think, how can he dream-up all these clever moves around their Liberal A’s? We have heard sound bits from the Democrats such as, the war dragging on, not true. Other conflicts we have engaged in have taken years not months. Bush said the war was over, not so. What he said was the major conflict was over now it was time for the cleanup. The only reason we went to war was to find WMD’s, not so. The President outlined several reasons for attaching Iraq. He wanted control of the Iraqi oil fields for the Bush Family, not so. The Bush family is out of the oil business. The Democratic sound bit of the moment becomes the most ridicules sound bit a moment later. You would think the Democrats would learn what carpenters have known for years. Think twice; speak once, (measure twice, cut once). Nine-Eleven (9/11) the President was in the air communicating with and directing those charged with handling the situation on the ground. Donald Rumsfeld was in his shirtsleeves digging in the rubble of the Pentagon assisting in the aftermath of the catastrophe. Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd and the rest of the esteemed members of Congress where hiding in a bunker. I am not suggesting they should have been out their shovels in hand digging in the dirt. I do think they should have left the dirt there and not tried to bury the President in it. There is a time, a place and issues for political debate. 3000 dead, thousands wounded and displaced is not one of them. Some Conservatives including myself are beginning to wonder if the President knows what the hell he’s doing. Then I take a deep breath, step back and analyze what he has accomplished in his three years as President. I am beginning to believe the biggest mistake supporters and antagonist make is to underestimate the intelligence of this man. He reminds me of a Western Coyote. Coyote’s are generally considered to be among the cleverest of the animal world. You will never see a Coyote on the endangered species list or as a fur coat. I think this President has a plan, I think we have to trust him, and then pray. This is the second day after the Presidents historic trip to Iraq. Democrats have yet to respond in force. I can’t wait for the Sunday talk shows. I think they will, for the most part weigh their word carefully. Hillary Clinton (I believe she was courageous as well. It takes courage to go into danger regardless of motive) the un-official front-runner for Democratic Presidential Candidate was campaigning in Afghanistan at the same time the President was (if they dare to use the term campaigning) in Iraq. The difference being the President is the Commanding Officer of all the Military, he was visiting his troops. Hillary isn’t President and She was campaigning. I don’t know if the President made the trip for political reasons or not, I doubt He did. I think he was sincere in wanting to express his appreciation and that of the Nation to those serving in a combat zone. I know one thing for sure. I never want to play poker with this guy. However Democrats try to spin this for their benefit in their direction I have no doubt they will meet with total failure. It’s pretty hard to out draw and out shoot a Cowboy when you got the sun in your eyes. ------------ About the Author: Ken Hughes is a retired businessman.
