What Judgment?
Aug 14, 2003

Many years ago I knew a man named Mel who lived in a nursing home. During one visit to the home I spotted Mel wandering the hallways, and asked him where he was going. He looked at me, for what seemed like the longest time, and then said, "That's the hell of it!" You see, Mel's mind was going, with the result that Mel didn't know where he was going. I thought to myself, 'What a starnge mixture of judgment and mercy;to be oblivious and aware at the same time.'

We have all heard of the frog in the pot of water. The water is slowly made hotter and hotter until it boils. The frog cooks, but a no one moment is the water hot enough for the frog to jump out. When did the frog start to cook, and at what point should he have jumped out?

If there is an Almighty, then He must be able to reward and punish people and nations for their actions. If the Almighty is unable to answer a challenge which, in part, is responded to everyday by rookie cops across America, then one should drop the notion of any God whatsoever. Stick with the Evolutionary Model, and stop your philanthropy so that evolution can take its compelling course.

If you're not yet that 'brave', then you must deal with a cognizant Creator, Who can also measure and mask His power. He measures His judgment because He is merciful, and masks His judgment because He will not be mocked. Well, this isn't Bible class, so let me focus on masked judgment and the socio-political scene in America.

The numbers clearly show that, since class-held prayer to the God of Abraham was banned in public schools, arrests of teens, teen suicide, and drug use by teens is up hundreds of percentage points. Since 1962 divorce and child abuse have also sky- rocketed. In 1963 the Supreme Court banned teaching the Bible in public schools. Since then, the events, practices and polices taking place in this Nation are brute witness to the barbarization of our culture.

The reply to the running social sores now evident is to allow local, state and federal agencies to put pretty-colored bandages across them. Despite the fact that pus and goo are obviously flowing out from under the bandages, more and more tax monies and programs are cranked-out.

These efforts are seen as proof that we are getting better at caring, and more moral in our social activities. In fact, they only serve to keep us feeling good about our barbarous cultural trends. It is as if we took a drunken Visigoth and put him in a tutu. We may have a dandy time with our sartorial efforts, but that barbarian will sober-up sooner or later. The Episcopal Church is now feeling his creeping sobriety. Lawyers are criss-crossing America looking for parents who spank their children, judges who display the Ten Commandments, and Boy Scouts who voice a belief in a God. In New York, taxpayer's money is used to affirm teenagers in their homosexuality by giving them their own public school. Just wait and see what a fully sober barbarian does with his sword, and other various appendages.

You see, part of judgment is not even knowing one is being judged. In Biblical terms this is called a 'strong delusion'. We are made to think that what's going on in our culture is our idea. The 'enlightened' decisions our Nation has been making for the past 40 years are part of that judgment. As we acclimate to each level of judgment, we may feel just fine; maybe even invigorated. The Optimistic-one, over at ABC Radio, gives a ho-ho-ho with each bit of evidence that the barbarian is sobering-up. We see bubbles in the water around us, and think it Champagne. We believe we are running the Ballet Theater when, in fact, we are part of the show. The true theater Owner will not be mocked.

The masking of judgment is also, in itself, a type of mercy. If we weren't slowly barbarized as individuals, we would be shocked to incapacitation. Imagine as best you can that an American who died in 1955 came back to life and stood on Main Street, USA in 2003. Better yet, imagine he went to an Episcopal service in New Hampshire. Better still, imagine that he attended that Episcopal service wearing a Boy Scout uniform. He would know that it wasn't Champagne bubbling around him, and would promptly drop-dead once again. Just having to be barbarized is in itself a type of judgment.

Oh, I went to college too and gotts-n-edgycation, so I know all about cultural evolution, paradigm shifts and zeitgeists. I also learned about barbarians, their practices and their blindness. I also know that barbarians can dress in three- piece suits, white coats, black robes, pontificals ... and tutus.

Benjamin Franklin said that, without God's concurring aid, America shall succeed no better than Babel. The hallmark of God's judgment on Babel was confusion. The frog in the pot was confused by the metal wall surrounding him. The frog thought is was a wall of protection, but it was really the wall of his execution chamber. The frog should have gotten out of the pot when, for 360 degrees around him, he didn't see trees and shoreline. A thermometer would have also helped a great deal, but that was banned by the courts. The frog was oblivious to his growing judgment --- and that's the hell of it! Anyone for boiled frog? How about Boils and Frogs?
