Jan 2, 2004 An open letter to the NYTimes… Ed: In the opinion of this reader, the NYTimes is in danger of becoming the WMD of the left. Historically, the NYTimes has lead the world in offering opinions both right and wrong. You have affected the nation and the world from the pages of the most powerful newspapers in the world. Journalism 101 teaches the writer some basic rules of journalism. 1. A story consist of who, what, where, when, and why. On occasion, add how much and how many. 2. Get the story, not used politically, for personal gain, free advertising or promotions. 3. Be responsible. Report the news, do not editorialize or take on position over another. Reporting the news is the heart of the newspaper. Naturally, an Opinion or Editorial page was needed, not by the reader, but rather to give the power of the pen a voice. In the 1800's, that voice was needed to bring light to the uses and abuses of the public. It was, a public service an editor, looking out for the rights of a community. But, in the 1800's who was opening a pool hall affected the community in a different way than now. Now, the opinion of the press can be seriously lethal. When a paper takes cheap shots at an administration or bolstering the bards of a bulbous buffoon with a history of being a partisan liar (aka Ted Kennedy's a war made in Texas) with hatred towards a party and a State. Who pays the price? Cheap shots like, reporting how the personal war of the Bushes is being lost or jumping the gun on the out come. Every time you take a cheap shot, you strengthen the opposition and undermine the resolve of our fighting men. You let people like Hillary and Ted play you like a piano. They in history will not make a footnote, unless it’s for the many scandals. Yet Hillary makes her-self feel good by making proud fighting men wait to eat their Thanksgiving Dinner. And the times fondles over her but, at what price? Wake up and smell the stench, Hillary's addiction is to protect Bill by proving a rightwing conspiracy. Somebody tell her, it ain't so! If it is, then it is much larger than those from the right! Ask Bin Laden! No, you do your readers, America and the world harm by playing the whines of the left. Has George W. Bush done a good job? Remove the hysterical hate reporting, but keep his feet to the fire and the answer is yes, he has. What would AL have done after 9-11? For that matter what would Bill have done? I wonder, why did Bin Laden wait for a new administration? Iran waited for Reagan, Bin Laden for Bush. Curious? I think so. Could it have something to do with legacies? Will Carter or Clinton be the worst of the worst? They do not accknowledge or follow the rules set by every former President before them. Why? Could it be, in spite of the wailing and carping from the left, the hate and loathing of a sitting President from hollywood and a former first lady trying to save face that they will be remember for their contributions to a safer, gentler, kinder world? Yes, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II will stand the test for what they achieved. Carter and Clinton for who. So, it is time, the Times needs to really clean house and get some unbiased writers or an editor who would edit your paper both fair and balanced. Not pander to the left or their rantings. Stop giving them free publicity and they'll dry up and go away. It's hard to resist, but what have you got to lose other than the legacy of being a WMD (Weapon of Miserable Democrats)? If you made the u-turn, and headed to the right, it will take another 20 years before you have to worry about being conservatives. If you don't believe me, ask O' Bill! He's doing what you should be doing, watching out for us, all of us, we they people... Got it? ------------ About the author: Jeff D. Riley is a second generation Italian American who lives in Texas.
